notes
Serpentone is a three-piece band from Portland, Oregon, fronted by Erika Meyer, guitar-slinging mama. Coming to life in 2004, Serpentone’s first regular lineup included Cyrus Yates (Hi-Fashion, Disseverence, Sunny Sunnae) on drums and a bassist named Tom who put a lot of effort into the project until June 2005, when he announced his departure by stripping down to his shorts, and smashing Cyrus’s girlfriend’s bass onstage. Tom then went on to seek fame and fortune in another band that broke up within weeks of their first gig. Meanwhile Cyrus, disheartened, also left for another band. Erika struggled to put the pieces back together again… and again and… again and…
2005, 2006, 2007… was marked by a seemingly endless rhythm-section search, with Erika continuing to write and play solo as well. There were several short-lived line-ups, with nothing lasting longer than a couple of months, and each band implosion more impressive than the last. Yet! many great staples of the Portland music scene rocked the rhythm section including nolan void (Decliners) on bass, Morgan Grace (Kleveland, Morgan Grace) on drums, Sam Henry (Wipers, Napalm Beach, Pete Krebs, Morgan Grace) on bass, and Tim Flanary (Stealing Daisies) on drums.
Finally, late 2006, Cyrus and Erika reunited to play some gigs, and a friend, Marty Vincelli, offered to help some of the songs at his home in Vancouver, WA. Cyrus freed up some time to be part of the recording process, and they recruited a new bassist, Skot “Withakay” Duthie (Volitle Mood, Zek) to fill out the trio. Erika eked out money from here and there and paid everyone much less than they are worth just to get it done. Finally, in early 2008, the album "Spiraling" was done. The end. OR IS IT????

Wonderfully Engaging!
author: Ron LutherSo how the H-E-double-toothpicks can this here 'angry' music be so darn 'soothing'? ;-) Answer: When it is as lovingly and honestly put together as this! I am enjoying this album very much. This is a very 'personal' album. Very engaging. An extremely solid effort. The 'honest' emotions captured here have been distilled enough to resonate with the unique personal histories and experiences of the listeners (at least for this listener). That resonance helps integrate the emotional content of the album so that this music quickly becomes a favorite pair of well-worn jeans for the ears. Kudos! This album is already a treasured part of my oddly eclectic playlist. <Whistles Loudly and calls ... "Encore!!" />

Serpentone. Erika. This album is..... pure. honest. raw. real. good. really good. For the above reasons I think it is one of the best albums that came out in the past few years (yeah really. because I just love pure honest raw real) Having heard a lot of her home made mp3's I must also say that she did an awesome job putting out an album of a very nice quality indeed without killing the purity of the demo's (which I have heard before, like, my own band, actually) You will love this if you loved the 90's, riot grrl, foxcore, grunge. Heck, you will love this if you love 'real' music, period. Only one thing could have made it better - adding the above mentiones "Fxxxed up on love" - but this gives us something to look forward to for the next album. Because Erika, we do need even more songs. okay?

I've waited a long time for this cd to come out. I have heard these songs live, so I might be a little jaded. Blue Blue I liked better as a raw punch you in the head demo, but this still delivers. Get Free rolls along and captures me, this is a real gem,. The rest of the songs are connecting chapters of real, dark, and raw emotion, walking and teetering on a razors edge. Division wraps it up with the perfect conclusion. Minivan Mom, and Missle Command are injected into the line-up, showing us some great, rocking, pop styled songs. Glad to have this cd, although, I will have to wait for the release of "F***ed up on love". Could have been a killer bonus track.
Stunning album by Serpentone
author: Joe DeltaI received my copy of this album a few days ago, but today was the day to sit down and give it a good listen. I was stunned!!! I already knew a lot of Serpentone's work, and I knew about Erika Meyer's struggle to keep the Serpentone dream alive, but still this album completely surprised me. Yes, it's that good!!! Straight forward and straight from the heart that's what Serpentone is like and that's what this album sounds like, and I mean that in a good way. It's not only clear that everything on this album is so very real, it also sounds great! The album also features my personal favorite: "Float" on which Erika Meyer sounds like an angel crying on the last night before the apocalypse. This song is so touching, that it shoots Erika Meyer up to the top of my personal list of favorite/best female alternative rock singers, joining names like Kristin Hersh, Tanya Donelly and Kim Deal. For anyone who likes alternative/rock/garage/grunge music, this is a must have!!!
