notes
SERPENTEENS were formed in late 1995 by Gee Grant and Mark Zap (known as “Fang Alphamayle” and “Bub Romero” when in character) as a side project to explore new musical and conceptual ideas not present within the context of their current bands at the time. Combining a passion for Horror and Zombie movies, with the love of theatrical bands (KISS, Misfits, Alice Cooper etc.), they began to lay the foundation for a concept. The look of the classic film "zombie" combined with a catchy "monsterpop" sound was to become a signature trademark.
The project recorded a 4 song demo titled "Dead Men Walking", with Gee providing vocals, playing drums and guitars. Mark’s considerable talents were put to use for bass guitar duties and backing vocals. This rare demo became a favorite of underground tape traders worldwide. In 1997 (with the disintegration of both of the duos main musical projects) the two decided to revitalize the Dead Men Walking project and breathe into it new life - as a priority. A new name was chosen and the two recorded a follow-up 8 song demo titled "VoodooZombieSexDolls". These early demos were later released as a CD collection through MP3.com and sold almost 1,000 copies, as well as being distributed freely on the internet.
Combining an infinite number of musical and theatrical influences the band has also created an unbelievably repertoire of well-crafted songs. In 2005 the band’s new lineup was rounded out by seasoned recording/touring veterans Frank Morin (Frank N. Stein) and Glenn Sorino (The Creature). In 2006 SERPENTEENS are back with new releases, songs and professional re-recordings of now-classic “monsterpop” material.

The UK seems to get it!
author: Bubble Gum Slut Zine - UKThe Serpenteens - Dead Men Walking (Blood And Guts) Holy heck, I think we’ve found a boyfriend for Liverpool’s own Zombina and the Skeletones. Seriously these guys could just be the male fronted version of the UK’s favourite held-back-in-high-school horror popstrels. Granted, the New Yorkers have been around the block a few times having started out in ‘95 but what’s a little age gap between the living dead? Okay before I get too carried away with the notion of romance blossoming here’s the lowdown on Dead Men Walking. The Serpenteens debut on the infamous Blood And Guts label this features a mix of fresh meat and older rotten rockers re-recorded to higher standards than the band’s original sloppy demos. The overall vibe is a doo-wop infused blend of Misfits and straight forward garage punk. Simple melodies drive the thing and pure pop choruses lodge in your brain on numbers like fan favourite ‘(Please Be My)Zombie Bride’. If these tunes don’t get you hoppin’ you want to be checking for pulse.. although on second thoughts the lack of one could be a pre-requisite for a liking of the Serpenteens. Ditto a love of Wednesday 13, Rob Zombie and of course Zombina.

Dead Men Walking (Blood and Guts) by Ewan Wadharmi "If you can't stand the sight of blood, close your eyes when you read this comic book!" warned the '70's ads for the Kiss graphic novel printed in the band's own blood. As close to metal Kiss got at that time was their faces on a lunchbox, and I've often envisioned myself smashing Paul Stanley with his own licensed likeness whilst screaming "Kiss this, made-for-TV's Star Child!" Dead Men Walking brings back that cartoon version of hard rock I so eschewed as a critical youth. But whereas Gene Simmons had his waggling tongue dripping red corn syrup on the stage, Serpenteens keep their tongues in their cheeks. Covering such subjects as zombies, aliens, monsters, zombie aliens, werewolves, and zombies, the songs really span the Saturday matinee genre. Be advised: Singer Fang Alphamayle yields an amazingly rich, mature voice that truly must be heard to be believed. Somewhat resembling Ozzy, but really that doesn't begin to fairly describe it, except that I'd listen to him sing anything, anywhere. "X-Ray Eyes!" has a late '60s happy poppy garage sound and rousing, tight harmonies inexplicably reminiscent of Eddy Grant's pre-reggae band, The Equals (Baby Come Back). Go back a decade, as Serpenteens' doo-wop their unholy matrimony to "Zombie Bride." There's a killer gold-rush trip to "Hell California" on the spaghetti western tip. The rest of the disc is a fine mixture of Sabbath and Misfits featuring graciously round guitar work with thick outlines like comic strips, satisfying driving rhythms, and sneaky melodies. Did I mention great soaring harmonies? Hands off my copy. Get your own. (www.bloodandgutsrecords.com)
a horror fuelled combination of horror lyrics and simple pop melodies
author: ROB LANE TrashPit Magazine UKKicking it since 1995, New York band The Serpenteens are a horror fuelled combination of horror lyrics and simple pop melodies that come together to create what they describe as 'Monster Pop' and it's great fun. In a scene where kids are eating up acts like Wednesday 13 and other horror influenced bands, The Serpenteens are a great addition to the fold and they've probably been doing it longer and better than most of the bands out there too. They have a great ability to drop great fun chorus'which instantly drill themselves into your skull and have you hooked by the second verse. Just check out 'X-ray Eyes' or the brooding 'Hell California' for just two of their instant blood fuelled classics. What gives these zombie loving rockers their own style though are their great fifties swing anthems such as '(Please Be My) Zombie Bride' which reminds me of early KISS when they had fun with tunes like 'Then She Kissed Me' back in the seventies. Anyone with a love of horror movies and good, fun rock and roll in the mould of early Alice Cooper, The Misfits and the mighty KISS right through to the current crop of horror rock bands should check out these monster music merchants!
Good review translated from German!
author: Loud and Sick MagazineThe Serpenteens started 1995 as a two-man-project. They expanded ten years later with 2 additional band-members. The first 4-track-demo of the 2-man-band, which was promoted to the level of an "underground-hit" was called "Dead Men Walking". The New Yorker horror-rockers then had a follow-up CD with the same title and new songs as well as old ones with improved quality. Now they have a contract with Blood And Guts Records and are distributed by Cargo Music. The 12 songs are all catchy and melodic. After you hear them twice you will be able to sing along. The lyrics are blackly (dismal, dire, dready, frowning...?)and the subject matter is on diverse horror-movies or figures. The voice of Gee Grant comes across as convincing and coherent (harmonious?). In mid-October the SERPENTEENS will play with BLITZKID before they will travel back to Germany. Next year I would like to see both bands together in concert. That would be awesome and would be a great match. Conclusion: cooler horror-rock, which allows for different influences. I am positive about this and look forward to a gig in my neighborhood. Play-tips: "Silver Bullet" "Death Tripping!" "Hell California" "Satana" "More Than Human"
5 1/2 Skulls out of 6!
author: Horrorwood Babble On And OnThese Gotham ghouls have released one hell of a debut. I feel waaaayyyy better about the future of horrorpunk rock after not only hearing this disc, but seeing the band rip it out live in the flesh. There are many parallels with The Serpenteens disc and Son of Sam's SONGS OF THE EARTH, which in my mind is one of the greatest horrorpunk releases Of ALL TIME! What you have here is a SOLID four piece hard rockin' band (much like Son of Sam) with some of the finest vocals ever put down in the name of spookiness. Granted the song subjects are campier than SOS but the melodies and throat delivery is the butcher shop hook that snags you and keeps you hangin' around. Listen to the melodic doo-wop intro on "Zombie Bride". They pull it off so flawlessly. The whole damn band executes at the same high quality of musicianship. Frank Morin (guitars), Mark Zap (bass), Glen Sorino (drums) and a charismatic front man in DJ George Grant. All our favorite subject matter is here too. Werewolves, mad scientists, zombies and The Serpenteens also have the good taste to pay homage to my favorite western of all time HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER with the track "Hell, California". These are all songs from earlier demo releases that have finally been properly recorded after a lengthy coffin break. I for one am glad to see them back in rock action and playing outside of NYC. With the new order of horror rock bands like The Serpenteens, Death Becomes You and the excellent Die Monster Die on the prowl we can all look forward to a frightening future.
Good Review
author: Past And Present WebzinePast And Present Webzine – October 31 06 These guys might see themselves as a horror-rock band, and while they might have a little The Misfits in their sound, I don't think there's much horror about The Serpenteens (other than in the lyrics of course). To me they sound like an updated and sweeter version of Black Sabbath with a melodic punk twist. And the lead-singer sounds a whole lot like Ozzy Osbourne. I've heard a lot of bands with lead singers sounding a whole lot like Ozzy, but there haven't been any as fun to listen to as The Serpenteens in a while.
Great CD review from NUVO paper Indianapolis
author: Nuvo paper, Indianapolis INYou may not have heard of "monsterpop," a wicked mix of Doo-wop and punk songs about zombies and succubae, but it's making a comeback! Recently having rocked a show with body extremists Only Flesh at the Ugly Monkey in Indianapolis, New York's own Serpenteens have released a new full-length album, Dead Men Walking. Peppered with hair-metal guitar riffs and clever lyrics, the Serpenteens started as a side project in 1995 when Gee Grant (lead vocals) and Mark Zap (bass, vocals) teamed up musically. They had so much fun playing songs about Halloween monsters year-round that they disbanded their other groups and released the VoodooZombieSexDolls demo CD. Now the duo, joined by guitarist/vocalist Frank Morin and drummer Glenn Sorino, have released a well-crafted, theatrical collection of 12 upbeat songs perfect for doomsday (or a zombie prom). Influenced by Alice Cooper, KISS and The Misfits, the band plays high-grade monsterpop that's cool for all ages. Highlights of the album include the opening track, "X-Ray Eyes" (1950's horror), "(Please Be My) Zombie Bride" (a love song), "Calling All Monster Kids!" (a fan favorite) and other tracks fueled by ghost stories, Faster Pussycat, H.P. Lovecraft and Pumpkinhead. So grab a handful of candy corn, turn on this CD and clear the room for a monster jamming good time!

author: Dr. GoreThe Serpenteens are a horror punk band from NYC with a particular catchy kind of sound. More along the lines of Horror Po as they refer themselves to be. This title seems to be appropriate. Although I would really let my 10 year old daughter (if I had one) listen to this album. It does have and edge to it that will satisfy most people’s cravings for pop music, while still keeping in tune with the rock and punk that they are known for. Now with this new CD Dead Men Walking, and a new tour on hand, The Serpenteens are on their way up the musical ladder. The CD is jam packed with 12 tracks all of which have their signature sound of monster pop to them and all are well played and sound tremendous. With titles like “X Ray Eyes”, “Siler Bullet”, “Day of the Dead”, “Antennae”, and their most known hit “Calling all Monster Kids!” it is obvious where their inspiration come from. They are big fans of 50’s style horror and sci-fi, HP Lovecraft, and of course zombies. Most all of their tracks really give you the feel of being in one of those cheesy horror or post war era sci-fi bug eating flicks. When you first pop in the CD their sound really comes out in the first track. More of a pop style tune that is catchy and rather upbeat. Judging by the lyrics most of the tracks here seem to have some kind of story to them. “(Please be my) Zombie Bride” is a good track that puts you back in time to the 50’s era doo-wop type of Prom or something. It’s actually a pleasure to listen to it. Almost makes you want to be in that gymnasium checking out all of the girls in their poodle skirts, but keeping in mind from the lyrics, that it’s some kind of Stephen King prom! First thought….Back to the Future. Not sure why, but…. One of my personal favorite tracks on the CD is “All Around Me”. This one to me stands out as the best “soundtrack song” that you could come up with. It really sounds like it should be in some kind of cheesy horror movie. Catchy tune and can be placed in about any type of situation or soundtrack for almost any horror movie. Very stylish track here. All in all if you like music that you can actually understand and can appreciate someone that can really sing, then you should check this out. The Serpenteens have almost made a new kind of retro music that is fit for a party, movie, or just chilling. If you are in a good mood and want to stay that way, then throw this sucker in. I can imagine that the concerts are jam packed with 50’s style pin-up babes, and psycho-billy studs, and horror freaks of course.
If you missed the band the first time around, there is hope for you after all.
author: Black AngelBefore My Space became the breeding ground for struggling bands, there was a site called MP3.COM and this, my friends, is where you would find the cream of the crop so to speak. I literally spent days at a time seeking out bands to jam on and review. One of my fondest memories of the site comes from a band called the Serpenteens. The Serps offered every damned one of their songs for free download and for those who are counting, that's how you create a buzz, people! Free will get you every time, but it wasn't all about the free. These NYC monster boys had the songs, the music and pizzazz to go along with it. The band is actually one of the current Horror Rock scene's forefathers along with Blitzkid, Diemonsterdie and The Frankenstein Drag Queens. The Serps sound was one part Misfits, one part Kiss and all fun! Unfortunately, the boys decided to call it a day and when MP3.COM bit the dust, the Serps went along with it. I never forgot about the band, I actually have the cd that you could purchase through the site, it's one of my most treasured among the 6,000 plus I own. Over the years I've played the disc in its entirety on the radio, I've told countless people, made tons of comps and done everything I could to keep the Serpenteens' memory alive. Early last year I received news that the SERPENTEENS had returned to take back their beloved throne at the top of Horror Rock scene and that, my fiends, is a definite. The band has completely reworked their legendary debut entitled, Dead Men Walking and have chosen to release it through Blood And Guts Records. If you missed the band the first time around, there is hope for you after all. The first thing you need to know is that the Serpenteens are the originators of the bulk of Horror music you listen to right now. There's no faking, no mindless ideas, no face paint, it's just flat out Monster Pop as the band has so lovingly tagged it. All of the songs here are fresh and more fun than a pit of zombies. Of course the lyrical content isn't very serious but that's the mysticism of it all; it's about having a good time in Horror-Happy-Land! To make the deal even sweeter, the Serps have added two brand spanking new tunes - as if the reanimation of the old tunes wasn't enough?! "Hell California", is the first of the new tunes and it leans heavily on the Cowpunk/Psychobilly genre which is fine by me. Lead vocalist, Alphamyle's storytelling here is magnificent, as are his vocals; he hasn't lost his stroke not one bit. Those of you who love Ghoultown, Thee Merry Widows and The Rezurex as much as I do will be diggin' up graves all over the place to this track. The next new tune is a cosmic little ditty called "All Around Me", it has an awful lot in common with the tune "Antennae" as they're both about aliens and space creatures. I'm not the biggest Sci-fi fan, but Alphamyle and the boys do a great job at making me want to watch Plan 9 From Outer Space and They Came From Outer Space again. And then we have my favorite track of the entire Serpenteens' catalogue, "Please Be My Zombie Bride". This tune didn't have to be reworked or pepped up to make me take a second glance, I was already fanatical about it. I've dug up many a dates in the cemetery while blaring this tune! The most important aspect of the new version of this track is the intro. It's complete with Doo-wop backing vocals much like you'd hear out of an old Platters' or Drifters' tune, which makes the lyrics even more sweet and heartfelt. Yes, I did say that about a zombie, hey even us Necro's can love, too! In true Horror Rock fashion, the tune "More Than Human" is carved from the storyline of the cult classic, Pumpkinhead. There's even some love shown to ex-Danzig guitarist, John Christ and Werewolves in the track "Silver Bullet". Every tune on the rendition of Dead Men Walking is a classic, there's not a weak tune on the disc. I love them all just as much, if not more than I did all those years ago. The addition of guitarist, Frank N' Stein and drummer, The Creature has finally solidified the band's line up. These boils lay it down all over this cd like it was the last time they were ever gonna be able to play music again and that's what it's all about folks - heart and fun. It's never been a question as to whether or not bassist, Bub Romero and vocalist, Fang Alphamyle have heart; they've been eating the hearts out of the underground Horror Rock scene for more years than alot of you have even known about horror itself. If you miss out on this cd this time around, you're gonna hate yourself forever! Stick a fork in me, I'm done - The Serpenteens have slain me again!!!!
