notes
Comprised of Vintage and Sadler, Self Taught came out of a lengthy retirement in 2002 due to increasing demand from a variety of musical, political, and religious sources. During their hiatus at The Sun Valley Senior Assisted Living and Retirement home they were pampered with apple sauce, dance classes, music lessons, and history courses.
The Vancouver duo checked out in 2002 and has worked steadily for the past five years on an assortment of material with a mixture of many talented artists.
Several years of experimenting with various genres resulted in the unification of various aspects of hip hop, rock, jazz, blues, punk, and electronic to create the Self Taught sound.
No boundaries, limits or borders is the attitude taken into every Self Taught album. This diversity is emphasized on their latest magnum opus, Arrival. The 2007 release creates an unparalleled listening experience that continually grabs the attention of the listener.
Arrival is a complete listening experience, an epic of sorts, a must have cd, not only for fans of hip hop, but for fans of music.

Excellent album. Every song is GOLDEN.
author: JamieHaving listened to their singles from time to time, I knew that buying Self Taught's first album was the natural transition for me; and I couldn't have made a better decision. Every track is killer and gets full credit for originality. You won't regret taking this CD home with you!
Truthful, unique and balmy for the soul...with just the right amount of grit.
author: BrittA CD such as this one is a rare jem. An easy listen that I can put on anytime and not feel the need to skip over half of the tracks. An 'easy listen' Self Taught is...but in the best way possible. Not the sort of easy listening that you would normally except from music described as such. There is much depth lyrically which gets accross to the listener by way of their easy breezy flow. Each track is richly detailed with different sounds that are all unique and pleasing. Like any great album, there is no shortage of description or accolades that I could fill this review with. I could go into the details of each and every track (particularly happy to do so with Ball & Chain), but instead I will get to the part that everyone wants to know: is it a good listen? It is a deep, interesting and honest listen which I will be diving into regularily because of the ease it brings along with its depth.
One of the best cd's i have listened to in a while.
author: DemiiI love the beats and the cd came out better than i expected. I have not heard an R&B cd come out so well in a while...
Come on!
author: JamesWhat can I say that has not already been said about this CD. Every song has got a new and unheard sound to it. I love it and I even got my girl to listen to it. So come on and try it, you will like it.
i love my life
author: Mike DecloneIts taken me some time to realize how good this album was, only because i lost it for 2 weeks after i purchased it. Beats that make anyone want to rap, and raps that make anyone want to make beats for them. Arrival is chock full of goodies and bangers, some might even say got damn heaters. plus i heard sadler was in a porno in 98'. GO BUY IT, or steal it for someone, its the thought that counts. OH.
Please don't sleep
author: Thomas Slivinski - Point MagazineAs an underground hip-hop connoisseur, and a former writer for Point Magazine, which surveys the independent music scene, I think I have some authority in saying that this CD kicks ass. Self Taught's debut album, appropriately entitled 'Arrival', catapults them on to the top of the heap of white rappers trying to make some kind of name for themselves. The two members that make up Self Taught don't sport bleached crew cuts, wear jean overalls with no shirt underneath, or talk about cleaning out their closets, however; it seems that they are much more intelligent than that, realizing that it's all been done, and there are enough Slim Shady's in the world as is. Combining well mixed beats with fresh lyrics, all tracks are tight, providing enough musical variation and intelligence to keep the album a joy to listen to, beginning to end, each time you pop it in. Sampling some old school sound bytes, guitar, and synth, the CD maintains an accessible feel while not cutting short on originality. With so many quality cuts it's hard to pick out favourites, but 'Unorthodox', 'Arrival', 'What Would You Do', and 'Through Our Travels' stick out for me. And as they say in 'Spouse Love' Self Taught's "got me smilin' again" thanks to this solid listen. BUY THIS ALBUM
debut album is great
author: RacerjoeWith great hooks, and lyrics this album has a number of great tunes. Some great Rhymes, and beats.
Solid first release... a foreshadow of whats to come
author: L-TrainI Definetely enjoyed this album on the Whole... A great variety of cross-genre beats built on dusty loops and a very wide lyrical content range. A few forgettable tracks but the heat quickly draws the listener back in... Key Tracks: Arrival,Elevators,Sizzooki,Strangers INN, Through My Travels, What Would You do Something for everyone on this album, check it out and hear the "Self Taught" sound for yourself.
Whole new sound, a refreshing listen...
author: MorganWhole new sound, a refreshing listen the entire way through. The beats flow great and conceptually the album content takes on more than your most people care to. I've been converted, can't wait for the new album to drop. If you don't know, now you know. Go tell somebody.
walking the fine line between the past and the future right now
author: Matto ChairoFeel free to choose any stereotype that comes to mind when you think of 'Rap music' and you'll find that Self Taught provides a perfect example of what can be created when those stereotypes are left out of the equation. No hype, no gimmick, just 2 budding poets serving an eternal detention in a search for sanity. Transforming lines from the blackboards of existence to something that anyone connect with, The Arrival serves up 15 tracks of classicaly produced beats combined with anthems of tomorrow. This will be an album that will be looked upon as one that forshadowed the situations that spawned reminiscince...
It's like my American Express card, I never leave home without it!
author: Mark60% of the time this album kicks ass everytime. Great flow topped off with intelligent lyrics that both entertain and educate. I've been learned. $13.75 for the CD. $14.00 for the over-night delivery. Listening to Self Taught over and over during my 10 hour drive/move to Michigan...PRICELESS!
its orgasmic
author: Katethe cd is sick... i listen to it all the time and you should too.
Nice tunes with no lack of content
author: ColdFingazSelf Taught is on some good vibes with lyrics demonstrating acute awareness with respect to today's mainstream hiphop. Their beats are catchy in an agreeable way and are laid out professionally. At times you can hear room for improvement but this is just a measure of their huge potential, which they are driving to meet at full throttle. Arrival is definitely a worthy addition to any head's collection for its consciousness and originality.
A new favorite!
author: K.D.Arrival has arrived! I was a big fan of these guys BEFORE the album dropped and they haven't failed me yet. You can play this album straight through, there is definitely something for everyone on here.
Self Taught delivers variety with Arrival.
author: Collin S. Van DykArrival has a great variety in both production and delivery. The 15 tracks give a sense of completeness to the album. Easily one of my Top-10 albums in my collection.
