2007. Americana UK calls Danny: "a captivating talent, with an intensely literate take on things that, at times, recalls that of Josh Ritter . . . but, if anything, encompasses a wider stylistic range and an arguably even greater sense of poeticism."

notes
Little Grey Sheep is Danny's fifth album. Recorded and produced in Charlottesville, VA at the home of Danny's good friend (and brilliant songwriter) Paul Curreri.
This album (perhaps more than any of the previous ones, even) holds true to Danny's aesthetic of intimate production. The arrangements are sparse and organic and tasteful and serve as delicate backdrops for the Songs.
Featured prominently on many of the tracks is the ethereal vocal harmony of the amazing Joia Wood . . . back from musical hiatus.
As for this collection of songs . . . they are, perhaps, more personal and accessible than Danny's last couple of records . . . simpler, prettier, and more sing-song. They still have the lyrical subtlety and nuance we've come to expect from Danny Schmidt songs . . . but sweetened a bit with a little sugar this time around.
Please visit Danny's website for much more information about this album, including a song-by-song commentary, full MP3 samples, reviews, and all the lyrics.

Wow!
author: Jefferson PepperDanny Schmidt is, quite simply, one of the finest artists I have ever heard.
From the Boise Weekly (5/14/08)
author: Curt NicholsOn a recent Saturday morning, one of the more eclectic local radio shows played a song that caught my attention. It was “Cliff Song”, my introduction to Danny Schmidt, and it left me wanting to hear more. Before long, I had purchased his most recent release, Little Grey Sheep, from CD Baby and was giving it prominent playtime. If you think the best singer-songwriters come from Texas, this CD offers further proof for that theory. In eleven songs – and the requisite bonus track – Schmidt makes a case for his place alongside singer-songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt, Todd Snider, Greg Brown, Robert Earl Keen, and even Leonard Cohen. Schmidt is an Austin native with an evident way with both words and guitar strings. His voice has a bit of a twang, but that just makes the harmony vocalists stand out more. Put together, the package he presents immediately draws the listener in. In “Cliff Song”, he sings of a tentative relationship, “I showed her her name engraved on my heart / She said there must be some mistake / I tried to invite myself into her room / But there were things that she was scared I would break.” He shares his philosophy on life in “Company of Friends”. It starts with the lines, “When I die, let them judge me by my company of friends / Let them know me as the footprints that I left upon the sand.” Then he concludes with, “I believe in living smitten / I believe all hearts will mend / I believe our book is written / By our company of friends.” While I hadn’t heard of Danny Schmidt before, Little Grey Sheep, it turns out this is his fifth album. And, it’s left me smitten and looking forward to numbers six, seven, and beyond.
Little Grey Sheep
author: Stacy HairfieldLOVE Trouble Comes Calling! The line "trouble finds what trouble knows" has made it's way into my life except that I've replaced trouble with such words as joy, gratitude, respect, LOVE... Thank you Danny Schmidt for giving us music to think about...raw and beautiful...you are truely a poet and I can't wait to lay eyes and ears upon you in real time.

author: Randy FullertonI instantly fell in love with Danny's rhymes with reason when I first heard his music on Whole Wheat Radio. But this album is the one that did it for me! And when I listened to "Company of Friends", I said to myself..."Yes, this guy truly understands about life, and he isn't afraid to tell it." Anyone who has a heart will automatically connect with this album...a big thumbs up!

author: mick boveeAbsolutely stunning songs perfectly delivered in his own style. Danny is one of the most gifted singer/songwriters working today, all the tracks are good so it wouldn't be fair to choose a favourite but the song that means most to me is Drawing Board.
Danny Schmidt
author: Shelley MarshallI love Danny Schmidt (in a completely platonic way)! I would definitely say I'm a Schmidt-head. Little Grey Sheep is very, very good. With one of my favorites "Go Ugly Early" (which is better when done live). Parables & Primes is an even better album. I truly believe Danny could be the next Bob Dylan. BUY IT!!!
Piet van Eede
author: P.J. van EedeIt's the first time that I've listened to the music off this ARTIST. He knows perfectly how to combine lyrics with music. I can advise everyone to buy this album! (ps, excuse the English spelling, for a Dutchman I'm not used to write in English)
Best Yet!
author: jeri RogersAs always, Danny continues to dazzle us with his lyrics and hypnotic melodies. This Cd is added to my pile of his past works and I think is his best yet! Danny has a very special gift and we are blessed to have him share his talent with us.
Riveting
author: Lynn WhittemoreI first heard Danny Schmidt perfom at a house concert a few months ago. I can't recall ever hearing a more poetic song writer, or a more heart-felt performance. What a find! Danny played "Company of Friends" at that concert and mentioned that it would be on his upcoming CD "Little Grey Sheep." I've been waiting impatiently ever since to get my hands on the CD. It's terrific. Read the lyrics to get the full understanding of just how special this man's artistry is. Can't wait to introduce my friends to him.

Maybe it's growing up in Montana and have a song about a beautiful little chunk of it . . . either way, Danny's samurai sword of songwriting, his ability to slash through anything that's not a heart on the sleeve, hits home once again. A little spicier and rockier than his last few . . . fully dug by me. Highly recommended, as are his others . . .

author: Bob GramannIt seems that every Danny Schmidt album contains at least one song that any songwriter would be proud of if it was the only song he ever wrote. This album is no exception. I plan to learn "Company of Friends" and include it in my performances. Maybe my eyes moisten too easily, but Danny has done it again.

Not much to be said that you can't get from just listening. I usually like my Danny Schmidt barebones, just him and his guitar, but this is artfully done. The man is a poet of words, melody and pacing. The album is a collection of stories about life, each story a small slice of the human experience. Bravo!
Danny's latest
author: SethI think you will like this album - just make sure you listen to the words. Parables and Primes is still my favorite album of his.

author: GARVI CHRISYou know this kind of treasure you wanna keep hidden from the rest of the world...Those thoughts you've kept for yourself, lurked in the deepest and darkest well...the horizons you cast your eyes upon to move on a little while more as the whole world is crumbling behind you...But be mindful : Danny's music can, in a blink of an ear, become an extension of yourself...and that is only about his music...cause the guy, the normal person that dwells within him, is always available, a man of humility, of humanity...but who cares as long as...errrrr....may be the two go together...Thanks so much.
