notes
She sings with an inherent sense of fun, drawing the listener willingly into her world - an emotionally-charged celebration of life and all its ups and downs. -- Steve Edge, The Rogue, Vancouver, BC
ALL MY EXCUSES is Karen Savoca's graceful new record featuring Pete Heitzman, T-Bone Wolk, and guest appearances by Greg Brown.
ALL MY EXCUSES dances through the realms of desire, loneliness, and betrayal. Exploring the wanderings and longings of the heart... "chasing off the shadows, left behind when you were here"
With the rolling guitar of Pete Heitzman and the thumping back bottom bass of T-Bone Wolk , one song is deeply textured, another is as simple as a front porch jam.
ALL MY EXCUSES. You don't need one.
Also look for Greg Brown's new album, MILK OF THE MOON, on Redhouse Records, which was recorded at Savoca's Alcove Sound and produced by Karen, Pete & Greg.

The most Passionate and Powerful CD I own.
author: Ken ZimmermanI saw Pete and Karen at Blissfest in Michigan. They were over the top. Karens songs take you for a visionary trip with emotions and stirs you deep. Karen creates an energy that moves you Spirit and Soul to the bone. Pete is magic on the guitar, together they are by far the best. Thanks Pete and Karen for your gift.

Nice. Bought this and All My Excuses together. Good combination.
It is all we hoped it would be.
author: Dan & NancyWe saw Karen & Pete at Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson,Wi. We're real happy with this album.
This CD just blew me out of the water - wow!
author: MarciOne great song after another. I love this CD so much that I used one of the tracks for a play that I directed (non-profit, don't worry!)...I don't think I've ever heard a CD with so much diversity, beauty and longing in it. Karen Savoca is a surprising and brilliant talent.
Our new favorite!
author: Emily GoodrumWe heard Karen and Pete at the Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, WI and immediately ordered four CDs - our favorite is "All My Excuses." If this music doesn't make you get up and dance, groove, sing, laugh, cry, and drum on the table, check your pulse. You may well be dead.
Too good to lose
author: John LeechWe heard most of these songs when Pete & Karen were on tour in Wakefield Quebec about two years ago. They cover a great range of emotions and musicality. Then someone stole the CD from my car (obviously another fan) So I just had to reorder. It still sounds great!

What a find, what a voice, incredible
Delicious!!! I'm back for seconds.
author: john @ JV VinylFirst heard her in the car on NPR and nearly crashed trying to write the CD's title. A killer voice, heartfelt lyrics, and a perfect balance of tasteful musicianship makes Karen's CD a must have.
If you haven't seen Karen live, make it a mission! She's powerful.
author: HeatherEvery song on this CD has a meanigful story. Karen's lyrics are brilliant and her voice is amazing. Buy this CD!
As enjoyable as their live concerts,
author: 9stringWhen seeing them in concert I was afraid that their cd wouldn't be as enjoyable as the show, but the cd brings out her passionate voice. I'll have to try her other stuff.
A very nice discovery!
author: Brian GaylordThis isn't background music, because even after repeated listening, you feel Karen Savoca deserves your undivided attention. Her sensuous, melodic renderings coupled with varied arrangements can captivate. The best examples of this are songs 4-7 and 10-12.
We first heard Karen in Clinton,N.Y. and fell in love with her voice.
author: Susan McEwenThis is a wonderfully mello CD. We love the range of the voice and instrumental sounds. Karen makes her voice sound like a pounding hammer in "Love is a Hammer".
A must have
author: Ryan RiggsI was going to give it four stars, until i listened to it again. From the intense and gritty Love is a Hammer to the vocal driven The Mark, this album shows a great range of sounds. While feeling more unified than some of the group's other work, it still has the variety that keeps it from being even the least bit stale. Whimsical without being silly, serious without being dry, this disc is a very important part of my music collection. My deepest thanks go out to Pete and Karen for this one.
Good variety of songs, very good recording quality.
author: Karin RiesThis is my first Karen Savoca CD. The variety of song styles show her talent sphere and her unique voice. I especially loved I Call Your Name, At the End of the Road, and To Colorado.
fantastic find!
author: Rachel ElertOne, who can follow such a wonderful review as the last one left on this site? It covers most of what I entended to say...I would recommend this CD to anyone who asked me to give them some artist names who had talent and passion. Karen's songs come from the heart and there go to the heart. I feel fortunate to have discovered her on a compalation CD with other female artists and fell in love with her voice. This CD only made me fall deeper . I also called to request her on the student radio station that I listen to, and they had not heard of her. However, after talking with the DJ, I suspect many others will be hearing more about her music soon and that pleases me that others will be able to share in the experiance. - Rachel Elert, teacher in Michigan

ALL MY EXCUSES (Alcove) • Karen Savoca This woman moved right to the top of the list of my favorite singers in a heartbeat. The sound that she's making is so sexy, so spiritual, and so womanly that it just knocked me right out. It's the sound of the ages, not the sound of the X or the Next Generation, it's the lineage of womankind. Hyperbole? No, not really. Check out the clips on the Listen page, you'll hear exactly what I'm talking about. But not yet. Let me tell you about it. Karen Savoca and stringmaster Pete Heitzman have been together over 20 years, and they do a duo act all over the world that is fearlessly them, and it's called Folk, for lack of better words. But it's also funky, it's lush, it's bluesy, it's a lot of good things. It's deep, it's real, and it's super good. I needed it real bad today, I've heard too many records that were shallow or contrived this week. Famous peers have recognized their greatness. T-Bone Wolk has been working with this duo for ten years on their records. Greg Brown goes on tour with them, for many dates this year. I heard of Karen Savoca through several musicians I deeply admire, and then saw her listed on Susan McKeown's site [see our review this issue, and archived interview] as one of her favorites, so I finally got in touch. Every time I find an artist this outstanding that I've never heard before, it reminds me how many of them there must be that need to be brought to a wider audience, and the mission of Puremusic becomes clear and worthwhile again. On the two funkiest numbers, "Let Me Down Easy" and "Love Is a Hammer," Greg Brown lays down his basso profundo backing vocals, really a great touch. Pete Heitzman is an amazing player of many instruments, and seems equally at home on acoustic and electric guitar, including tenor, baritone, slide, and bowed guitar. He also plays Hammond organ, mandolin, banjo, bass pedals, and cello. Right. Karen is a very funky percussionist on conga, reed thumb piano, roto tom, tambourine, talking drum, xylophone, and shakers. She is also a fine guitarist. This duo is a great new find for us. Check it out on the Listen page, and be sure to visit their entertaining website. • Frank Goodman -- puremusic.com
