notes
This Boulder, Colorado-based quintet, with the 2000 release of their self-titled CD, hear the established forms with fresh ears and then give something a little different back to the audience.
Drawing upon the different musicl styles that each member cherishes, they mix Rock, Bluegrass, Funk, Country, and Blues into an upbeat sound with rhythmic punch.
Songwriter Tim Davis (guitar and vocals) played his original songs for many years with the local acoustic quartet Downwind.
According to the Estes Park Trail Gazette, "(Davis') soulful lyrics weave stories of joy, of pain, of relationships gone bad and of friendships that endure." From folk beginnings, the stylistic scope of Davis' songs broadened exponentially in 1997.
With the introduction of electric guitar, electric lap slide, and a spicy southern bass/drum team, Savage Patty was formed.
The rhythm section are J.D. Droddy (bass and vocals) and Kimball Barnard (drums), who have played together for 25 years.
In their hometown of El dorado, Arkansas, they began their career with jazz guitar maestro Richard Leo Johnson and also recorded and performed with avant-fried blues project The Big Red and Green Ones.
After moving to Boulder in the early 80's, they continued their rhythm partnership with The Griffins and Bigfoot and the Prehistoric Dogs.
Both of these bands were semifinalists in Musician Magazine's "Best Unsigned Band Competition" in 1994 and 1996.
From the atomic city of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Patty Machen (violin and viola), is a veteran of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and Downwind and has learned to take the sound of the fiddle "into the ditch".
She has add the growl of rock and the sultry punch of funk to here previous range of classical refinement and bluegrass melody.
Marty Humphreys' (electric lapslide, guitar and vocals) musical journey with Tim Davis began in 1986.
He has played in Downwind with Tim and Patty, recorded with Bigfoot and the Prehistoric Dogs, and performed with the Danny Shafer Band.
He is known to throw in spice with the mandolin, cornet, and pennywhistle.
"(There is) something raw and earthy about this little band. I am pretty sure that there might be some vegetarians, but I would not be surprised if they were all cannibals. It is folky rock and roll with a little country and some rollicking good times mixed in this stew. Uh oh, I must be hungry again."
