notes

Sassparilla are street musicians hailing from the home of the blues, Chicago. They are synonymous with old Maxwell Street, famed for its blues, casual drinking, rows of garish saloons and street vendors.
"Their music often has a rumpled sound to it, as though they are tucking in their shirttails as they play. Other times, their compositions come together with a sudden smoothness or elegance."
Sassparilla play Americana, blues, rag blues from the 20’s and 30’s, country blues, barrelhouse blues, jug band and trance blues. Influences include: The Memphis Jug Band, Gus Cannon, Luke Jordan, Blind Blake, King David’s Jug Band, Bukka White, Tampa Red, William Moore, Django, R.L Burnside, Robert Belfour, Luke Jordan and the Reverend Gary Davis. “Chicago’s own Sassparilla combines the punk mentality of their youth with traditional music; the result is nothing less than a sonic junket.”
Sassparilla currently consists of Tater Jackson Moeller on washboards and jug, Dan Frantz on Percussabass (a washtub bass played simultaneously as snare drum and bass), Pappy McDonald on harp, and Gus Blackwell on National Steel, banjo and vocals.

The cd apparantly was made live on the street...and it sounds like it, but these guys are great! For all you guitarists out there, this is a master class in fingerpicking blues guitar, and when the bass kicks in...heaven!

Crank up your victrola...this disc sounds like an old 78 found in your great grandaddy's basement. A gem, can't find folks that sound this authentic anymore. Thanks fellers!

  • good-time music that'll make you grin

Roll a smoke, break out the Nehi and watch the fireflies blink while you give this friendly CD a spin. Your tapping feet will drive the dog out from under the porch but everyone else will love it.
