Sheasby Matiure is a citizen of Zimbabwe. He has received graduate degrees in music in both Zimbabwe and the U.S., and has performed across Europe, the U.S., and Africa both as a solo artist and as Artistic Director of the Zimbabwe National Dance Company. A renowned player and teacher of the mbira nyunganyunga, ngoma (drum), hosho (gourd rattle), marimba, and choral singing, Dr. Matiure has taught for many years at colleges and universities in the U.S. and Zimbabwe and has been conducting workshops on mbira and marimba throughout North America over the last decade.
Sheasby Matiure and the Mbira Queens perform songs on the Mbira Nyunganyunga, a 15-key plucked instrument found along the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The songs, sung in Shona, are based on Zimbabwean folk tales and proverbs.
