notes
Sarah was born and raised in North Carolina, and started singing at the age of four. Music has always been like her imaginary friend – a companion, a confidant, and always up for exploring the world.
Her mom sang to her in the rocking chair as a baby, her grandmother sang in a bluegrass band in the Appalachian Mountains, and her early memories of music are listening to George Jones and Mahalia Jackson with her dad. These roots ground her even today.
She sings of loss and life, joy and solitude, renewal and searching. She
communicates with simplicity and earnestness, conveying an innocence that belies the depth and wisdom in her lyrics. Her voice is at once light and powerful, capable of inflection, dynamism, and command that carries her music well beyond the reach of most singers. Sarah is capable of self-expression to a degree that one rarely hears - idiosyncratic, fraught with personality, inspiring, and vulnerable. To hear her music is to find your own voice in her words.
Her recent album, Ladybirds, has meditative musings (Dublin, Ladybirds, Rough Stone), and explores the world outside with its human frailty (Return Return, Two, Blip). Sarah crafts these songs with some of the qualities of the artists she is inspired by – from Dolly Parton’s dynamic tambre, to Patty Griffin’s poignant narratives, to the soulful candor of The Be Good Tanyas. As Ladybirds shows, Sarah doesn’t exactly sound like any of these artists. She has forged a sound and identity that is uniquely her own.
With just her voice and her guitar, Sarah’s powerful lyricism celebrates roots origins in an urban life, and reifies the imagination through song.
