notes

Momma Sarah loves music. When she was a little girl, she used to sit on her daddy’s lap while he banged out old blues tunes on the piano. When she got ants in her pants, she’d skip on over to the other room, where her momma would be playing eerie French folk songs or winding Celtic reels on the guitar. This resulted in a musical sensibility that’s blues-driven, heavy on the harmony, old-fashioned and fresh off the griddle.

“...a sassy young lass with such a kick-ass voice!”
- The Puppini Sisters

Sarah’s influences run the gamut, from Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon and Koko Taylor, on through Jimi Hendrix and Bonnie Raitt, to Bjork, Daniel Lanois and Pierre Bensusan. After studying performance at NYU, she added a little indie-rock to her mix, lending her vocals to bands like Brother Love, Dayna Blitz’s Hapikrak, and Toke Squealy.
She met and married her man guitarist Brother Dave Likhtiger (Jessie Murphy, Dona Oxford) all in one night at the legendary C-Note Blues jam. He pulled her back into the blues stew. Since then she has sung lead in the house bands at the C-Note, Hank’s Saloon and Lillie’s blues nights, shared the stage with great artists like Sly Geralds, Michael P. Nordberg and Baby Monroe, toured here and there, and gigged with her trio all over the New York area, with standing gigs at lower east side hotspot the Anyway Café.

“A woman channeling some serious delta spirits.”
- Elizabeth Carpenter

Recently she’s been playing with her Super Blue Band, a flexible collection of scalding hot players, including Mazz Swift (Jay-Z, DJ Logic), Dirty Darian Cunning (Meshell Ndegeocello, Kristin Hoffman), her kid brother Brendan (The Valkyrian Underground), and jazz baby Sarah Novia, among others. The harmonies are thick and smoky and the mood is illicit. Think Judy Blue Eyes in a moonshine still.

Sarah’s voice has been described as a cross between Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald (how could you go wrong?), and her songwriting moves through linen-freshness to land in a pile of lost B-sides from 1968. Superbleu is her first release. Some of it’s in French!
