Her sound has been described as everything from Norah Jones to Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple to Alicia Keyes. It is tempting to make comparisons but she's much more than a carbon copy. In fact, she is anything but. Influenced by soul, jazz, rock, and pop-her writing is bold, honest, and edgy. Intelligent, unpredictable lyrics and melodies delivered courtesy of a truly soulful and powerful voice, Sara's music is something that definitely sets her apart.

Sara sang and performed in her native Humboldt County community productions and high school ensembles, but has no formal training in either voice or piano. Much of her adolescence was spent perched in front of a worn piano teaching herself chords and scribbling out simple melodies and lyrics. Though her first compositions "Star Sweeper" and "I love a Parade" didn't win her any Grammies they remain testimony to the fact that songwriting has been a passion of this 25 year-old since a young age. Over the years, those early compositions have grown into songs that are currently heard in independent films, television, and on local radio. The first performances seen only by the walls of the house she grew up in are now experienced by hundreds of people at a time.

A graduate of UCLA's Communication Studies Department, Sara has spent the last three of her seven years in Los Angeles developing her skills as a songwriter, vocalist and performer. She can currently be seen performing at local venues, festivals, and universities on a regular basis. In 2003, she co-produced her first independent studio demo, "Careful Confessions." She exhibits an insatiable thirst to challenge herself and find new ways to tap into her own creativity. "This recording was a milestone for me, and a lesson in understanding the relationship between being in creative control and knowing exactly what you want. I was very humbled by my own lack of confidence and vision. It made me crave a better understanding of my own music, and what I love about the music from my favorite artists. It made me realize the role of a producer and my own capacity to fulfill that role. The whole experience was very powerful, and the final product is a tangible piece of my learning process. I'm nowhere near being finished. Now, I want to do it all over again."

In April 2005, Sara signed a record deal with Epic Records. She is fast approaching the next level in her career, and she is thrilled, but has reservations about trying to find her niche within the music industry. While her pursuit of a career in music was never really in question, Sara is finding difficulty in deciphering where her path leads now. "I know where I want to go. I guess I'm just becoming more aware of the millions of different ways to get there. I'm struggling to find my identity as an artist in an industry that seems to punish you for needing time to figure it out. I'm going after my career goals in a way that makes me feel confident in the decisions I'm making and allows the music to speak for itself. If I achieve a more modest level of exposure because of this, so be it. It's about the music. End of story."

    The CD starts out strong. I had fallen in love with "gravity" from the first time i heard it. The rest of the album had to grown on me, mostly because i was expecting more of the piano sound that i had heard in "gravity"... but now i love all of it!     This is a great CD both music and recording wise. While not all the songs live up to Fairytale (that would be hard) this is a pleasing CD through and through. It leaves one wanting more and wondering why Sara is not on a major label yet. [Hopefully she'll squeeze out at least one more CD before she's picked up and they ruin her with that overly compressed sound that has become the standard.] Buy it and enjoy it!

    I saw Sara play in Fairfax, VA, and it was one of the most amazing performances I've ever had the pleasure of listening to in any concert of any genre of music. I could tell people there who had not heard of her were impressed as well because I could literally hear gasps and "wow's" during her performance. Highly recommended cd.

    Why did I have to hear her music for the first time in 2 independent, lesbian films -- Loving Annabelle and Girl Play?! I live in Atlanta and I can think of least 3 radio stations here who should be playing the songs from this CD! "Gravity" and "Undertow" are top 5 hits -- top ten at the very least! I never thought I'd find a CD that would get as much play as my Sarah Mclachlan CD's, but this is it! And while no one will take Sarah's place in my heart and CD player, this artist and this CD run a VERY close second!

    I heard the song "Gravity" from the Loving Annabelle movie and I had to find out who the artist was. I found out and looked her up and found her site. I found myself a fan of all the tracks instead of just the one I heard. The track "Responsible" is just great as is "One Sweet Love". Not a sad and drury album,but makes you reflect on your journeys. I was a bit skeptical, thinking "Gravity" would be my one track wonder. WRONG ANSWER! It has been quite some time since I heard a CD that moves me in this way.     I saw sara when she supported Maroon5 at the Manchester Apollo a couple of years ago,where I bought her CD in the lobby. It is still my favourite CD to date. Her songs have deep emotion and strong character. There is not a bad song on the album and there is always a song the reflect my mood. I just wish that she would come back to England so that I could take my friends to one of her shows.

    What's most amazing about Careful Confessions is that it's Sara's debut CD. Most artists are lucky if they compose anything close to this in a lifetime. I first heard Fairytale and Undertow when I caught glimpse of Sara as a bar singer in the movie Girl Play. I immediately did some research on the net finding her website and CD. One of the best musical purchases I've ever made. Every track is amazing. Undertow and Gravity is the stuff of musical dreams. I live Buffalo, NY and I would love to see Sara perform live if an east coast tour were possible. I could definitely imagine her on tour with Sarah McLachlan, though I don't know if I could stand that much musical bliss at one time. Good luck in the future Sara. I'm sure a major record deal is only seconds away.

    One of the best CDs I have. The lyrics of basically every song are clever and interesting. The tune is excellent. Her voice is beautiful, but won't put you to sleep like Norah Jones. I have been hooked on this CD for 6 months now - I'll listen to one song for a couple weeks because I'm hooked on it, then the song will change, and I'll be hooked for another couple weeks, and it doesn't get old. I ordered the CD from here on the 28th of Dec '05 and it arrived hand delivered to my door step in FINLAND on the 5th of Jan '06. And in perfect condition. CD Baby rocks! But you know what, Careful Confessions, rocks even more! Seriously, Sara Bareilles was the best artist I was lucky enough to stumble upon online in 2005 and I love her voice. I've been listening to this CD on my iPod, on my computer, pretty much everywhere I go. I love it and I cannot wait for her new album.

  • The Ideal Girl

    Sara is the ideal female singer-songwriter; her music is emotional without being whiny, easy to relate to without being trite. The songs on this CD all reveal different facets of the artist, and at the end she leaves us dying for more. I first was captivated by Sara's music at a live performance at UCLA and have been a huge fan ever since. The outstanding songs on this album (if I have to choose) are Gravity, Undertow, Fairytale, and City. The very enjoyable Love On The Rocks is now featured on the Monster-In-Law soundtrack. I would recommend hopping on the Sara B bandwagon now so that you can tell all your friends you discovered her before she made it big.

    I loved this album because of how much I could relate to each of the songs. The lyrics are honest and true to life, and the music gets stuck in your head. While I love every song on this album, two rise as my favorites. "Gravity" is just an amazing song and the first time I heard it was a cappella on the BOCA CD. I was hooked and that's how I ended up finding Sara's album. I also absolutely love "Fairytale" because of the lyrics and the great piano rifts in the background. This is a great CD to relax to. Overall, a CD I play quite frequently on repeat and I even gave it to a friend who owns a coffee shop who plays on regularly. Looking forward to what's next to come from Sara B.

I had put off buying her album because I was afraid that she might be a one-hit wonder, but I absolutely love every single song on this CD. I bought it about a month ago and still haven't gotten sick of putting it on every night. For such a young artist, Sara has an amazingly huge following from all over the United States already.     "Careful Confessions" never lasts long enough, and needs a companion CD full of more songs. The down-to-earth intimacy of the songs and the soft, lounge-like recording brings a person into a private performance with the artist, and you never get tired of it. Tantalizing tempos, delicious changes in rhythm, smooth piano-work, and a voice that carries a whole person inside the lyrics. It is a CD of undeniably pure aesthetics, appreciated in my experience by fans of different genres, solely because this CD is good, solid, clean, PURE MUSIC. As long as the next CD is of the same constitution, I look forward to it with much enthusiasm!

    This CD is my favorite CD that I own. Before "Careful Confessions" I spent 10 years being mildly obsessed with Sarah McLachaln's "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy." Now I have a whole new set of anthems!! I received my copy of this CD as a bootleg from a friend of a friend about 8 months ago, and I have not stopped listening to it at least once a week since then. I have told everyone I know about it and tried to find Sara online, but was unable to locate any information until now. I hope and pray that Sara will put out another CD soon, so that I can have one more CD that follows every mood I have. Unbelievable talent!!

    I had only heard the song Gravity before I bought the cd, and since I got it in the mail it has been the only thing I've listened to. It fits all moods, from the slow comforting sounds of "my love" to the upbeat rythms of "love on the rocks." Her voice has the careful blend of controlled talent and letting the emotion of her words pour recklessly through the notes. In essence, she has amazing talent and this cd is just the right kind of proof.

    I heard Sara B in concert with Maroon 5, loved her, and bought the album. It is great. She has a great deal of talent, and her songs are meaningful but fun to listen to. She's a mix of Nelly Furtado and Norah Jones without the commercialization. Good for jazz/pop fans. Give it a try, and if you're anything like me, you'll love this CD!

    Great CD from a great upcoming artist. The first song, Gravity, is a low key opener that slow builds to a climax. The 4 live songs at the end are fantastic, and the sound quality is excellent, so don't worry about it sounding like a bootleg. #10, Red, is a great song to dance to, with some great harmony on it. Overall, i like the whole CD. Some great lines include "I could use another cigarette/But don't worry daddy, I'm not addicted yet" on Come Round Soon. "Cuz old habits are so hard to break/It'd be a shame to stop now that that I've started to make really good mistakes" on Undertow. She's a great writer and has a good sense of melody. Kind of like a cooler and more exciting version of Norah Jones. I highly recommend this one.

Well, my friend was right from beginning to end - I can't get enough. I love Undertow and Fairytail, but feel bad for picking the two out of the eleven as they are all great. The range of talent is amazing and the CD is a great blend. The way the songs flow together is awesome. I want more Sara B!

This album is solid jazz with tight vocals that are far from overdone. Funky, energizing bass riffs and smooth guitar fills. Soothing music, yet full of emotion and energy. The album presents a good variety in song style, from full band, to just piano, or simply accapella. I find this album inspirational and band full of talented, quality musicians.     I would have to say this CD is a wonderful album by Sara. She starts off the CD with arguably her best song, Gravity. Ready for radio airplay in my mind. Undertow is catchy and very soulful. Fairytale is clever with a strong message. I enjoy almost every song on this album. BUY IT!!! support sara

    This CD is amazing! There is a mix of studio and live tracks so you get a chance to hear Sara in all aspects. There are no bad songs on this CD but "Gravity", "City", "Undertow", "Red" and "Love on the Rocks" really stand out as being the songs that will elevate Sara to the next level. There is so much emotion and passion in her vocals and lyrics that you can't help but get drawn into her songs. She is a hugely talented artist that is on the verge of big things. This CD will definitely help her get there.

    Awesome songwriter and performer! Careful Confessions really captures her outstanding talent. The songs are catchy, and sound great whether they're recorded live or in the studio. I've kept this in my CD player for months now and it still captivates me. Each song is a gem, but some are just outstanding- "Gravity" could be the song that launches her musical career. "Undertow" and "Love on the Rocks" have a quality about the music and lyrics that's as hyponotizing as waves breaking on the northern California coastline, with choruses great to sing along too. "Come Round Soon" absolutely sizzles, "City" draws you into the story, and "Red" is THE best song to bring you out of a lousy day. Buy this CD!

    What a gorgeous sound and terrific, intelligent lyrics! Tracks six and seven are the sweet spot on the CD for me, but there's not a disapointing song to be found. I gladly recommend it.

    Sara is the next big thing and I feel lucky to know about her already. Her lyrics and voice are absolutely incredible and unique. It's tough to compare her style since it is just so refreshing and enjoyable. Her live performances rock and she has a sense of humor to boot. All these songs are great!
