Santa Dog - sparkly pop urchins with a sinister perimeter
Since the year 'dot' bands have come and gone offering a variety of treats for those that have taken the time to listen. Formed in 2005 in Bristol and spurred on by lack of sunlight, dubious beverages and most importantly musical influences that never engulf their songs, SANTA DOG's heartfelt, delicately-fried guitar pop is sweet relief for music fans all over. After the success of 2005's Chemical EP put the band on BBC One Music, Radio 1 and into the 2005 top 10s of several leading indie music websites, the new songs have a real air of confidence about them. Touting their third EP, Belle de Jour, this is the sound of a band hitting their stride.

"By George, the Belle de Jour EP is the best yet. There's a new found sparkliness and glitz (I'm sure I heard a harp towards the end of 'Belle de Jour'?) but it never gets sickly thanks to the dark overtones of the vocals and lyrics, even when they are being playful. If there is any justice in the world (and we all know there isn't) then 'Pop Coloured' would be flowing out of our radios every morning instead of Pussycat Dolls." Tasty fanzine
"another top-drawer slice of female-fronted indie-pop. Santa Dog's melodic melancholy is reminiscent at times of the Sundays and cult Britpop starlets Echobelly, but make no mistake, they've managed to carve out their own charmingly-distinctive niche. Fragile vocals, guitars that shimmer and echo and an abundance of hooks. Good stuff." Tom Leins, Voices From Downtroddendom #4
".....this is the sound of a band evolving and growing more self assured. Opener and lead track 'Belle De Jour' starts with an electric urgency and with the help of the nifty guitar riff this song will be stuck in your head for days. 'Rosa' is another cracking example of how Santa Dog excute perfect pop. Intelligent lyrics are under pinned by a great melody. Nice and simple but oh so effective. Santa Dog are a band that are fast improving. They were already a current favourite of mine but this EP really is a step up from anything they have released thus far." Lostmusic.co.uk
"Belle de Jour sparkles with a clarity of sound and shows a clear and confident step forward for the band. Whilst their indie intensity stays intact, the sound and delivery presents a more accomplished package...... On this evidence, it seems that Dugdale and co. are on a serious upward trajectory, and if things continue apace, this Dog may yet have its day. Trevor Raggatt, Wears the Trousers

author: Collected SoundsI reviewed Santa Dog's previous record, "Chemical", and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But I think this one is even better. Such fun Indie Brit pop. It doesn't get much better than this! [read full review on site]
