San Pedro Slim is now known in bigger circles than his San Pedro haunt
Harold’s Place. All kidding aside, he is one of those
dynamic performers that is true to the art that he possesses...
THE BLUES.
There are so many blues artists that are never recognized. Many times these musicians live their lives, it makes them happy and life goes on. To Slim’s credit, as difficult as it is to put out a CD that will stand the test of time; Slim has nailed it once again.
It has been awhile since his first release; no back up, no label, no publicity, no coat tails to ride on, just the goods. San Pedro Slim in the studio with some great sidemen. Buy the time and lay it down; 11 cuts of blues bliss. The results are stellar. In this studio setting, west coast blues meets 50’s Memphis and Chicago blues in a way unique to Slim and his cohorts.
All song writing credit goes to Slim. It is everyday life that he writes about. Slim is quite the storyteller, just book him in your establishment or festival. There is usually a joke or two between the music, this is his “schtick.” Nevertheless, once he counts it out the other side of Slim comes to the bandstand. This is the real deal, straight ahead or lowdown; he is a purist. Slim plays it the way it should be played and preserved. Sure there is the traditional sound, but the modern day originality to keep the music fresh is all over the place.
With guitarist Rick Holmstrom tearing it up throughout this set of great tunes, what more can you ask for? Need I mention Andy Kaulkin on Piano? Letting it loose when Slim and Rick are laying low. On the third cut Door To Door, Slim comes alive with his harmonica chops. However this is just a teaser; wait until the title track Barhoppin’, truly an inspirational Memphis style rave up. Throughout this set of wonderful blues originals, the Detroit transplant rhythm section of Dale Jennings and Donny Gruendler are truly in the pocket. Did I mention soul? West coast soul with I've Got A Good Thing, what a surprise! If it is slow blues that you like, it doesn't get any better than
When Will I Get My Time.
To critique this CD is something I was not going to do for the liner notes. The music speaks for itself.
You are that small percentage of the public who understand this beautiful art form we call the BLUES, pure and simple this is the Blues
San Pedro Slim style.

author: Kyle Scott New Zealand.All original songs fron Vocalist/Harp Player San Pedro Slim.Extremely enjoyable mix of Shuffles to R&B ballards.Slims voice at time reminds me of James Harman.Backed by an excellent group of sidemen including the Outstanding Rick Holmstrom on Guitar. I'am from the other side of the World but if I get Stateside I'd love to catch Slim Live.Highly Recommended.
