notes
"Sandman" Sandy Allen and friend Michael Packer formed the group Papa Nebo in 1970. The group's debut album (on Atlantic) received critical acclaim, and within a year a follow-up album was in the works. As fate would have it, that record wasn't released, but some fine music was recorded, and Sandman's songs from that effort are contained here. Over the next couple of years Sandman travelled and continued writing and recording songs with a mind to make a solo album. A reunion (around '74) with Michael resulted in the formation of a new band, Free Beer, who released three albums (Buddha, RCA) over the next four years. All of those previously unheard 'interim' songs, as well as all Sandman's songs from Free Beer are on the Anthology album, including the single "Coupe de Ville", the gem "Getting There is a Drag, Sometimes" and the beautiful and poignant "Riding Shotgun on the Dreamwagon". Sandman did eventually make a solo album, "Horses to Water", also available at cdbaby!
