notes

One of the greatest bands to ever come out of the southwest in the late 80's after pioneers like Green on Red, Naked Prey, and Giant Sand.

The band was formed in 1985 by Rich Hopkins and David Slutes and have gone on to paly for nearly 20 years in the USa and Europe. They even once were famous on MTV with a video called "Witchdoctor" that came out in 1989 on RCA Records.

1998: RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (San Jacinto/ Blue Rose Records)

I went to college in AZ right when these guys were coming up and have continued to follow them up until this day. They have yet to put out anything that is less than great - this is no exception. They may be a bit mellower now but Rich´s Crazy Horse guitar sound and Dave´s smooth voice still compliment each other like the desert Keef & Mick. Great songwriting all around. If you are or were a fan don´t hesitate, more of the same from a great band!

It was so great to get another unexpected treat from these guys. Long one of my favorite bands, this one is not close to the vital three (Witchdoctor, Ramos, and Sand Rubies), but like all their other albums, it has it's highs and lows. The Gap an machines rock hard; there's the usual cool duet with a woman (Flotsam and Jetsam), and even the novelty song, (Fukem) which I wish I wish I had figured out before playing the album for my kids. Good song, but more f-bombs in 4:00 than in all of "Scarface." The only really low point was Showcase '89, a cool tale of their discovery that I wish they had confined to thei liner notes. All in all, a good listen -- but do yourself a favor and get one of the big three first (RAMOS!!!.
