notes

Sandro Gomes was born in São Miguel in the Azores and immigrated to East Somerville, MA in 1984. During the 80's, Sandro spent most of his time on the streets, rapping in the shadows of such mainstream artists as Run DMC and LL Cool J. In the early 1990's he began to experiment with Portuguese rap, but it wasn't until he met Hendrik David Gideonse XIX, founder of Indecent Music, that he fully exploited his talent in the studio. Sandro brings a smooth sexy voice to catchy, danceable music. He weaves his lyrics with Hendrik's melodic hooks to carry forth his message.
Before Sandro's debut album, "Portugal," was manufactured and released in the US, it was a major hit in the Azores. The CD pirates did a brilliant job of launching Gomes career. The renowned documentary film producers, Joãquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel soon contacted Indecent Music. They had heard a bootleg copy of Sandro's music and were interested in using it in their new film, "Rabo de Peixe," about artisanal fishing in the town of the same name. Sandro will perform the opening night in the town of Rabo de Peixe at the dedication of their new cultural facility.
In the meantime, Sandro and Hendrik have been busy with interviews. TVI Portugal sent their US Correspondent to do an interview that was aired during Thanksgiving weekend in Portugal, the Azores and Newark, NJ. The duo also did a live phone interview with Antonio Melo Sousa of RDP Acores Antena 1 (Azorean Public Radio).
Sandro's January album launch will start in Newark and finish on the coasts of the Azores. Currently, Sandro continues to work on his sophomore release while Indecent Music actively negotiates with European distributors.

  • Just one of the many HipHop Tuga

Is not Bad, but I prefer "Da Weasel", "Mind da Gap" or even "Boss Ac" this 3, I think are the best HIPHOP Portuguese singers. About the Title "Primeiro HIPHOP Portuguese" I'm not so sure I always thought that Mind da Gap where the first ones. With their first release in 92 or 93. But still is pretty good. What all maters is "Forca Portugal" that all Portuguese singers keeep the good work. Well at least he not created a Band name not Portuguese. Almost all the others HipHop "Tuga" used English names. I can't understand why?

It's about time a portuguese musician takes a chance at rap and actually makes it. I'm so proud of you sandro g. for not only your courage, love for your heritage but for your truth in your lyrics wich discribe life in the islands for so many people and the fact that you use your own life experiences to reach out to your fans and give them hope that no matter your backgroud you can make it. My kids are both teenagers, 16 & 17 we always listen to rap music and also to spanish rap music like daddy yankie and pit bull because it was the closest language to my first language of portuguese. My husband is from south america and I've always played spanish music for my kids, but now I can play portuguese music that not only they enjoy but will learn from. Keep up the awsome work sandro g. may God bless you and your family always. Please dont stop producing music for your people. Love... Fatima & family... P.S. I listen to your music online every day...

I heard about Sandro G from my husband, who is actually from Terceira, (I am from Rabo de Peixe myself). He had asked me if I'd heard of Sandro G (as everyone assumes that everyone knows everyone in Rabo de Peixe if you are from there!) I told him that I had heard of no such artist. We got home that night and we downloaded a couple of the songs. I found them quite interesting as there were many things that Sandro said that we could relate to. I called up my brothers and sisters and told them to listen to it.. We found ourselves all kind of bobbing our heads to the beat and giggling because I think that we were all in shock that someone from Rabo de Peixe actually made it BIG!! I have listened to most of the songs from the album, and as some of them are quite harsh, I really enjoyed them. I have ordered the CD and will definately share with family and friends.... Congrats on the album Sandro and keep up the good work!!
