notes
Sam learned to play guitar (and a little piano) from his Dad who played the three-fingered thumb picking style and tried to sound like Ramblin’ Jack Eliott. Within a year of picking up the guitar Sam was playing rhythm and singing backup for a blues band. He even managed to sneak in a few of his own tunes. It was during these years that he learned the fundamentals: the 1-4-5 turn around and the pentatonic scale. Later, while in school at WVU he was a guitarist and singer with the acoustic string band Tanglewood, who played their version of old time and new time blues and bluegrass at festivals, bars, and backporches throughout West Virginia.
Recently Sam has focused on his own material and recorded an album of 11 original songs. On the album he sings the lead and harmony parts and plays guitar, mandolin, and banjo. He can be found performing mostly around the Morgantown area where he has been living since 2001. More information can be found at www.samlamont.com.
