(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

This album is about freedom of spirit, freedom of truth, political and constitutional freedom, freedom from bondage of others and of self, freedom to express, freedom from relationships - the many meanings of the word in song, most of which Sam wrote.

notes

Every time I do new cd, it turns out to be a reflection of where I am in my life - what I am thinking, what I want, where I am going. More than any project I've ever done, FREE is that mirror. I wrote most of the album, and every song examines different definitions of the word "free": Free of spirit, free to be your truth, political and constitutional freedom, free from bondage of others and of self, freedom to express, the pain of freedom from a relationship. The word "free" means many things. At this point in my life and career, my primary freedom is in creating and, hopefully, living without the distraction of expectation. But of course I have the hope that this record speaks to others and their personal definitions of what it means to be FREE. -- Sam

Sam Harris' diverse career has run the gamut from singer/songwriter to director, writer and producer, as well as being an actor on Broadway, film and television. He got his start as the grand champion of "Star Search" in its premiere season.

On Broadway, he received a Drama Desk nomination for his role in Tommy Tune's "Grease", and a Drama League Award as well as Tony, Outer Critic's Circle and Drama Desk Award nominations for his work in Cy Coleman's Tony-nominated musical "The Life." He's also appeared on Broadway in Mel Brooks' Tony Award-winning musical "The Producers," in the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," and in the musicals "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Cabaret," "Hair" and "Pippin." He also starred in self-penned shows "Hard Copy," "Different Hats," "Revival" and his critically acclaimed show, "SAM."

Harris is a multi-million album selling recording artist with nine studio albums to his credit. He can also be heard on numerous concert, guest artist and cast recordings. He has toured extensively in concert and has played to sold-out audiences at major venues including New York's Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles' Universal Amphitheatre and London's West End. He has appeared with The Boston Pops Symphony Orchestra, at The White House and has sung on a variety of television specials and live productions.

Behind the scenes, he co-created and wrote the television series "Down to Earth." He also served as the music supervisor for the Emmy-nominated television special "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration."

Most recently he was seen on the CBS comedy "The Class". TV Guide and columnist Liz Smith called him the breakout character of the television season.

Sam recently accepted a deal to host his own tv talk show with the Lifetime network partially based on his work via his vlogging on SamTube.com.

  • Now I know what to call it.
    author: John Hancock

I cannot express how much this music has meant to me. I "came out" at age 38, 6 years ago. Very conservative, religious, guilty, tired. My life has never been better. I am so happy. When I heard the first song, FREE. I shouted thats it...I AM FREE! Sam, Thank you sincerely for all you do to make the world a better place.

  • Welcome Back, Sam!
    author: Amanda Abel

It's been too long holding our breath for Sam Harris' next venture into the studio - and he does not disappoint. I've been a fan of his searing, emotional vocals for years now, and I wondered what more he had in store having already claimed the arena of Broadway and standards. But he's pushed the envelope and come up with something new and different. Sam's political views are all over this one, and he's hopeful, especially in the best cut, "Change is on the Way." Clearly he's been as depressed as the rest of us over the last 8 years, and has used those feelings to go a pop/hip-hop/rock route to explore his feelings and touch us, as he always does, with his compassionate, extraordinary voice.

  • My Favourite Album This Year
    author: Jen (Midgedog)

I was so thrilled to find out Sam Harris would be releasing another Pop album with original material - and this album was worth the wait. Whilst I love his renditions of cover songs and his theatrical releases, his amazing ability to put soooo much emotion in his voice shines even more stunningly when he is singing about his own life experiences. His amazing tribute to Obama "Change is on the Way" should be used in Obama's campaign - it is so catchy and positive. Other favourite tracks of mine include Anchor Of Love, Only Angels Know and He Is. The CD has been in my car stereo since it arrived in the mail, and I can't imagine wanting to play anything else for some time. Huge congratulations to Sam and his team for producing such an brilliant album, and sharing it with his international fans like me, through this wonderful site. The Bonus DVD was fascinating, and thanks to Sam and CD Baby for making it available to all purchasers through this site. 5 Stars - highly recommended!
