notes

During his youth in the small town of Saint Joseph, Louisiana, Sam Crawford never dreamed that he would eventually amass a nationwide following. But what all seemed to happen overnight actually had its roots in a tragedy.

"I crashed my car back in 1996," says Crawford, "and found myself at home a lot more without any transportation. I had this little child's keyboard; the keys weren't even full-sized. I started playing around on it and tried my hand at turning some poetry I had written into songs. Looking back on it, they honestly weren't very good. I played my first song for my friend Peter, and he told me to never quit my day job!"

Crawford, 32, says he is amazed and thrilled that music is his day job now. And the biggest thrill of all has just come about; his debut album, "Reality," has been placed on the final ballot for the 2006 Grammy Awards in six major categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Male, Best Pop Album, and Best New Artist.

Thanks to the advent of the Internet, digital sales of "Reality" began to take off earlier this year. Submitted to the Grammy Committee along with thousands of other albums, "Reality" is now on one of the most exclusive lists in the music industry.

"Reality" is a mix of musical styles, reflecting the artist's soulful Louisiana roots and poignant musings. It stands up to its name, fusing raw truth with inspiring songwriting.

One review from a New York City fan states, "('Reality' is) not for the lazy ear. You have to pay attention to the words and music. I found it rewarding to do so." A devoted Washington, DC listener says, "Not since Elton John nor Tori Amos has such an original piano composer brought melody and word to creative fruition."

What does Crawford have to say about "Reality?"

"There is always something to write about. Every once in a while I will see or hear something, and keep it in my mind like a flashbulb memory. And when I feel the creative spark coming on, I tap into what I've retained. 'Reality' was about a lot of sorrow and heartbreak in my life, and while I find it hard to relate to those feelings anymore, I will always be proud that they are immortalized in the form of my original songs. Songwriting is my life, and I know in my heart that 'Reality' is just the beginning."

  • Inventive, distinctive, timeless, and gorgeously written!"

Sam Crawford’s Reality - a debut album - is a musical revolution. One wouldn’t guess it perhaps at first review, but it is raw, truthful, emotional, and contains the best composition of anything out there today. It’s not cookie-cutter pop (although that’s always fun) – NO, this album is true, real, and poignantly magnificent. Sam Crawford has written all his own lyrics and melodies. He himself plays the piano and sings on this musical delight. His work is almost an honor to listen to, and it is clear his genius is a unique, fresh breath of air. The artist puts his heart and soul into every song, evident in his soulful reflections, deep enough for meditations, yet too powerful for anything but painful self-aware discovery. His piano compositions mix different styles from light pop to soulful blues and are unmatched - and quite frankly - reflect the best of what is written today. Sam Crawford’s Reality is inventive, distinctive, timeless, and gorgeously written, through-and-through. No wonder he is a current, first-round Grammy nominee!
