Pretty World
author: Jerry HarvilleThis guy has an almost haunting still. Shades of Hank Sr. and Roy Orbison! I bought the first one unheard this one is so good!
Pretty World
author: Maurice A CowdenI went online to read the interview and listen to a couple of songs. I was very favorably impressed and ordered the cd. I was even more impressed when I listened to the complete album. I then played the interview for 2 of my children who also loved his sound. Keep up the good work Sam!
One of the best!
author: Michael SatterwhiteThis is an amazing recording. I listen to, and seek out, many varieties of music. Sam's Pretty World pulled me up short and I've just had to listen to it time and time again. I love it and am purchasing copies for good friends. Keep up the good work Sam!
What a pretty world!
author: Gerard van MookThis is the best cd I heard in months. Wonderful music, fantastic, moving lyrics. Sam Baker has become one of my favorits. I hope he comes to the Netherlands for a few concerts.

beautiful lyrics, beautiful songs
Sam's his own man ...
author: Andrew HawkeyIt helps to know the extraordinary story of Sam Baker's brush with death and subsequent reconstruction - it explains his minimalist voice and oddly halting delivery, but these are themselves among his unique strengths; and when you factor in his literate and humanitarian writing, and the breathtaking instrumental arrangements, it's little wonder everyone's so excited. His melodies are often cut from the same limited template, but no more so than Van Zandt, Clark, and Prine, with whom he's been compared. But comparisons are lazy - after a few listens to this (and Mercy), you just know that Sam's his own man. Totally life-affirming.
Pretty World
author: Ivor SMITHIf you liked Mercy, you'll love this! Voice and half-spoken delivery remind me of Todd Snider, songwriting more poetic though (and that's not to take anything away from Todd, his songs have more humour I think). Anyway, another treasured item in my collection. Thanks Sam!
Pretty World
author: Sue BavinAnother great album. This guy is very talented and I cant wait to see him perform live.
THE NAME THAT CANNOT BE NAMED
author: Cynthia C. FontenotThe Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu says "The name that can be named is not the eternal name"....Putting a label on Sam Baker's work "pretty world" is taking away from it. It is THAT GOOD!! It is nameless and is thus "the origin of all things." Thank you Sam for sharing these thoughts and stories with us!!
SAM STRIKES AGAIN
author: REMO CORINTIHEY GUYS, THIS IS A GREAT MASTERPIECE, I THINK IT'S AS GOOD AS MERCY, SO BUY THEM BOTH, FIND TWO HOURS AND LISTEN TO THE ALBUMS TOGETHER. YOU WILL JUMP ON YOUR CHAIR AND SAY: SAM, YOU ARE THE GREAT SONGWRITER ON THE PLANET! I DID IT!GOOD LUCK FOR ALL, SAM. CIAO AMICO.
Pretty World
author: Mick BeagleyThe problem with this album is that I decide which is my favourite track then play the album again ,and change my mind, again, again and again! The excellent music forces you to listen closely to the capturing words. All involved in producing this terrific experience should be proud and heartily congratulated.Next album??
pretty world
author: the marimba bellesI, as a teacher of instrumental music absolutely your arrangements. It proves one doesn't have to be noisy and unsubtle to capture the mood. Sensitive and moving. Thanks for posting it on the site so we can all enjoy your creativity.
Another gem.
author: Bt CatWhat can you say about Sam Baker? The best "dusty" songwriter in the business today. The comparison range from Prine to G.Clark but he's truly unique. It's only once every decade or so that we're fortunate enough to hear a new legend in the making and this guy is it.
Superb Storytelling
author: Chris M.Pretty World is a work of art, absolutely beautiful. I cannot get enough of it.
you don't have to have a good voice
author: music is lifeMusic, like visual art is conceptual. This album demonstrates this admirably. You don't need a good voice to make a very compelling album. The concept, I find, is extraordinary, and the result... well, just alot of fun and eminently listenable.
Pretty Cool
author: Eric LehtoVERY VERY VERY PLEASANT CD
author: Bert VisserAmazing songs, technically brilliant, western ambient
author: RstJThis is extraordinary--like Beirut, but in a western context with fantastic lyrics (check out the beginning of "Juarez") and a technique that really stands out. songsillinoismp3.blogspot.com turned me on to this. Glad they did. RstJ
