A collection of songs as sailors sung them: bawdy, raw and uncensored, accompanied by concertina, guitar, banjo, accordion and ukulele.

notes

Sailors, like any exclusively male community, have probably always sung "dirty" songs. Even a cursory perusal of the available literature reveals ribald songs from cowboys, soldiers, rugby players, boy scouts. The available literature is scanty, however, since few folksong collectors preserved material of this nature. It is, therefore, one of the last branches of folk music that still relies primarily on oral transmission. If you want to learn songs that deal frankly with sexual themes, find a group of men without the company of women, open up a bottle or two, and stay close until the singing begins.

For seamen, the enforced abstinence of sea voyages created a pressure that found an outlet in the singing of bawdy songs. Much material has been lost to us, but there remains a small body of song of maritime provenance that is still pure and unbowdlerized. It is my intention with this recording to preserve a few of these gems, to probe this back channel of sea music. These are songs from both the merchant service and naval tradition, songs of long ago as well as of today, and songs from all corners of the English-speaking maritime world.

  • Cool Compilation

I bought this as birthday prezzy for someone about to go on a cruise! It certainly got him in the mood before his trip. It is a collection of filthy sailor songs with a kind of folk style music. Each song is very long and as there are 21 on the disc it is well worth the money. I paid extra (express) to get it quicker and it came two days later! If nothing else a great cd to have in the car on your way to work!!

  • Artistic Vulgarity
    author: John

I like the vocal quality of the composer and the music does not compensate for a bad singing voice, rather it adds to the time period environment of these compositions. This album has a quality of arising from the hardworking unwashed vulgar crowd as opposed to the crowd that endeavors to gets it kicks from the broken end of a bottle.

This is great stuff. Vulgar and funny. Right up there with the works of Oscar Brand!

  • Oh, Yeah!
    author: Allan

Winston Churchill once said that the Navy was built on rum, sodomy and the lash. This one gives uproarious credit to them all. It is everything it is advertised to be ... and more.

I've got a rather nice colection with this kind of music , but since I received this "salty one" in my postbox , I presume it will be a popular one to listen and listen again. certainly !

  • River Otters Attack.

Maybe we can work on an album together. I don't know. I'm not really interested in swearwords but I am a decent harmonizer. But you seem to have the harmonies done well by yourself. I am not a PHD so I don't know if I can really contribute anything. I just appreciate your music and thank you. my email is mleach@hotmail.com and I am not gay. But I am musical.

  • Absolutely Discusting and Shocking
    author: Matt again

I keep listening to this music to look for swear words. There are so many that the hairs in my ears give up. Recommended.

  • Ex Parrot of Captain Kid.
    author: Matt Leach

Salty Dick was one my better kindly keepers. I enjoyed sitting on his shoulders. He swore and cursed very much as I recall. And he was very unpleasant of mornings. As I recall. I'm still laughing.

  • A great bit of music
    author: Dreadbelly

Everything I had hoped for and more, this CD provides plenty of mood music while I go a plundering. The songs are wonderful to learn and sing, like say, while you are waiting in a line or in a lobby.

Being a pirate and all it was good to hear some of the old favorites. I find myself singing them quite often as I'm at the helm.

    author: Fred

As a recently converted Pastafarian, I bought this CD to familiarize myself with the circumstances under which my pirate ancestors operated.

    author: tjay

Really fun, DIRTY songs guaranteed to make you smile. Perfect for sing-a-longs if your friends are a bunch of drunken louts like mine! Makes you really wonder about shipboard life during the golden age of sail -- you wouldn't want to be a cute cabin boy . . .

  • Like them other salts said......Bloody Brilliant!!

Stumbled upon this by accident while looking for other types of "specialty" songs. Bought it on a lark. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS CD!! Hilarious (and somewhat moving at times...) and extremely well performed and recorded. I can only hope that Salty Dick has some more material in his archives....I can't get enough of these tunes!! THANKS!!!

  • Excellent CD for those looking for a good laugh
    author: Keith Rose

After hearing the clips on the website I bought this CD right away and let me say that it certainly has not disappointed! I've been listening to it for over a week straight now and the songs still don't get old. A great CD for anyone looking for a great selection of dirty songs to sing along to in the car or to sing while you're at work.

  • An excellent presentation of an outstanding selection of sailor songs!
    author: David Sparks

A truly excellent collection and an outstanding production. Having spent time at sea in a variety of roles(albeit 30 years ago)and being an avid reader of maritime lore (fiction & non-fiction), these held a special interest for me and they do not disappoint. Listening to "Christopher Columbo" in my car's CD player on the way home is a quick way to wash away the day's work stresses. And mentally playing "A--hole Rules the Navy" is a fine way to help you get through that tedious meeting at the big corporation! Highly recommended!

  • The BEST bawdy sea shanty CD ever made.
    author: John Mehlberg

This is simply the best authentic (and bawdy) sea shanty CD that has ever been made. It includes many songs which have never been recorded before -- some orally collected from Stan Hugil.
