notes

"Chandelier" is the eigth album by New York songstress and MPress Records founder Rachael Sage. Self-produced by Sage, recorded by John Shyloski and mixed by Grammy® Wiinner Kevin Killen (Elvis Costello, U2), the album is filled with what MOJO Magazine describes as "warm, intelligent...indie New York charm" and centers around the theme of fragility.

Backed by her regular touring outfit The Sequins (Dean Sharp on drums, Russ Johnson on trumpet and Dave Eggar on cello), Sage shines amidst a slew of additional special guests, ranging from Adam Levy on guitar (Norah Jones), to Todd Sickafoose on upright bass (Ani DiFranco). A seasoned performer, Sage will be touring throughout 2008 in support of "Chandelier", her most ambitious, and soul-baring effort to date.

  • Don't miss these beautiful, haunting songs of Indie siren, Rachael Sage
    author: Jill

“Chandelier”, Rachael’s eighth release, is made up of thirteen-tracks that spin an intense emotional journey spanning from dark and moody to pure joy and gratitude. The songs are an eclectic mix of strength, tenacity, and fragility as expressed in love, unrequited love, manipulated love, adultery, and the fantasies and disappointment inherent in so many love relationships. Sage’s lyrics are pure poetry – intense, stunning, emotive. Her beautiful, edgy voice and keyboard arrangements capture the vitality and vulnerability that keep hope alive and enduring. The soulful echoes of a cello renders the tunes inviting and haunting, and the addition of trumpet and drums draws an upbeat sensibility. Other instruments include guitar, harmonica, accordion, and saxophone. Raw, passionate vocals on "Vertigo", "Invincible", the mystical twist on "Blue Light" and the gorgeous latitude on "Wishbone", and "Moonlight & Fireflies" in addition to the thrilling, inventive instrumental arrangements make for a knock-out on performance on “Chandelier”. Always a poet at the keyboard, Sage’s keyboard artistry and winsome voice enchants through metaphor and metonymy - "Butterflies crawling on the concrete lawn/ Telling me to love you if I’m gonna be strong" ("Wish Bone"); “I’ve carried you like sawdust in the bottom of my shoes, accused” ("Corrine"). Poetry weaves multiple layers of meaning and songs are mostly open-ended for interpretation. Sage’s idiosyncratic empathic storytelling skills appeal to a diverse audience, for there is always a personal connection that one may make and through which each song seem as if it is written for oneself.

  • Artistic Alt-Pop of the Highest Quality
    author: J.

Hovering in the sphere of Feist and Regina Spektor, Rachael Sage continues to create brilliant albums that speak to the soul. This 13-track collection is full of lush piano arrangements, accompanied by a wide array of instruments that accentuate her haunting voice and poignant songwriting. Often steeped in metaphor, universal themes unfold within the saccharine yet mercurial feel of the album. Chandelier opens with the dark, frenetic "Vertigo" - an ode to self-discovery within an adulterous relationship. Another noteworthy track, "Angel In My View", is a catchy, up-beat love letter to a friend with playful trumpet flourishes that highlight the poppy yet euphonious melody. Overall, Chandelier is an excellent representation of her now eight-album-deep catalog.
