PUBLIC RECORD is the brand new release from East Village DIY songstress, poet and visual artist Rachael Sage. Self-produced by Sage and Emmy-winning producer/engineer Andy Zulla (who met the former ballerina while recording her first studio demo at age fifteen), its fourteen keyboard-driven tracks reflect an adventurousness and contemporary, feminist perspective which have earned Sage critical praise as well as a passionate grassroots following.
For her latest effort - her fifth album in almost as many years - Sage enlisted fellow New Yorkers Ben Butler (Dar Williams), Stephanie Winters (Paula Cole), Jack Petruzelli (Joan Osborne), Dean Sharp (Moby), Mike Visceglia (Suzanne Vega), Richard Gates (Patty Larkin) and Doug Yowell (Duncan Shiek) to flesh out her trademark "folk-noir" sound.
THE VILLAGE VOICE describes Rachael's music as "earthiness, color and emotion" and her piano playing has been equally praised by KEYBOARD MAGAZINE, BILLBOARD, THE BOSTON GLOBE, PERFORMING SONGWRITER and ROLLINGSTONE.COM. Having already shared stages with Sarah McLachlan, Toshi Reagon, Eric Burdon, Ani DiFranco, Richard Thompson and Sheryl Crow, Sage continues to tour the U.S. and Europe year-round. I like this album .................. a lot!
author: JohnnyI like this CD. Rachael is a very talented songwriter, and I'm impressed with the overall standard and quality of the sound, style and production. Well done Rachael - we'll have to try to get along to one of your gigs if you come to the UK!
Hauntingly beautiful ...
author: jenny matthewsI too am an artist on cdbaby..I have never heard anything quite as powerful as your music here! You are lyrically and vocally stunning. Sort of reminded me a little of Tori Amos..but much more honest. I wish you the best and thank you for sharing your gifts.
i think rachel is on the cuttin edge of new music with jazz and folk
author: peter joseph pauli have been into rachel's music since she first gave me her cd when i met her while i was performing. it was painting of a painting. i then acquired illusions carnival, but i was hooked since i first listened to "undertow" which is still my all time favorite of rachel's material. kudos, girl, keep rockin' i will complete my collection by acquiring "ballads and burlesque "smashing the serene and "morbid romantic. i love her and her music. miss sage combines the soul of a romantic intertwined with political consciousness as well as her own personal views of relationships, life, situations and experiences which we people on this planet in this universe need so we can truly be healed.
WOW
author: JaciThis is another one of those... GREAT ONES. I am a dancer, and always looking for "DEEP" music to dance too, and this is a definate must-have. I give this CD 5 stars!!!
A beautiful, sweet, honest CD
author: Michelle ArnoldThis is my first Rachael Sage CD, and I love it...I don't really understand why people compare her to Ani DiFranco all the time. I love Ani, and I love this CD, but they don't sound anything alike. Rachael Sage has a beautiful voice and she plays the piano beautifully. Her songs are sweet and honest. It is always wonderful to hear a woman who is not afraid to sing overt love songs to other women. The CD is overall pretty mellow, but there is a lot of diversity in sounds among the songs.
great variety and talent
author: CatherineI absolutely love "Bravedancing"--it reminds me a lot of Jonatha Brooke and The Story ("Angel in the House"). The whole CD is surprisingly refreshing, with great variety of styles and amazing talent from Rachael. Great for driving!
soooo glad i finally got this CD
author: LaurenI saw an ad about this record back in 2003 and I went to her site and I instantly loved the song "brave dancing" and I was hooked. The whole album is amazing and I am so glad to have this album in my collection!!!!!
Exceeded my expectations
author: JillI first heard Frost on the radio. Not knowing any other songs or anything about RS, I bought Public Record based on that one song. The entire album is more than what I expected (even better).
This woman is sooo talented..I now have 2 of her cd's
author: CarmaThis artist is truely an artist. Her voice is majestic. I just love her...My family thinks she is the best. Even the way she sings her words is sooo fantastic
- author: CD Baby
A favorite around the CD Baby warehouse, Rachel is an artist who lilts her way into your musical life to the point where you wonder what you filled those empty little holes with before discovering her voice. With the emotionality and sheer creativity of Tori Amos, the widespread appeal of Jewel and an unmistakable knack for clever instrumentation, thematic emphasis and talent for constructing a rich, rumbling foundation for her light, poignant voice, Sage is nudging her way through the crowd of Folk Pop artists with diligence and success.
She's Amazing
author: Jesy JonesThe Cd is her best. Racheal Lays it all out there for us and it doesnt get better. The Song Too Many Women is one of the most moving song i have heard in a long time. Its hard to find a women sing with this much talent and direction this cd proves that racheal has it and can reveal it all.
holy....where did this chick come from!?!?!?
author: mimichicaI am utterly speechless. I was looking at the new Idina Menzel cd when this website suggested I also try Rachael. Before tonight, I had no idea who this woman was. After hearing 30 seconds of Too Many Women, I was hooked. Then, Bravedancing had me crying so hard I had to turn down the volume before the song was over. This stuff is achingly beautiful! I am ordering this cd right now!!! Wow.
"Too Many Women" is a classic
author: Michael KaneRachel Sage's song, 'Too Many Women' is a classic tale of heartbreak, a song to listen to late at night over a cigaret and a glass of scotch, watching the smoke climb lazily to the sky in a pale imitation of Rachel's jazzy phrasings. Do not miss this record!!
She toped herself - again :-)
author: Marc Eichhorn, Frankfurt - GermanyI believed her "Illusion's Carnival" album is the best I have heard from Rachael but with "Public Record" she toped herself. Listening to the first song "What if" gave me goose bumps. And this feeling continues throughout the whole album. The intensity of the melody in combination with the words makes me feel like I have witnessed these situations. For me it's still a miracle why Mrs. Sage is not a member of the musical hall of fame but in my soul she is! But who am I to judge this great artist. Thank you Rachael for sharing your music with us.
Rachel Sage........... Hits again...........
author: Rikks RevuesThis New York based singer songwriter is putting out her fifth CD on her own empress records. Hey , what the heck right , it worked for Ani DiFranco and Righteous Babe records. Rachel Sage takes an adult alternative look at the world around , and within herself. Well crafted songs that ooze with emotion and passage that is a commitment to her work .
