“OUTERSPACES” is Sadhappy’s fifth genre-bending CD. This disc features new collaborator, Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Beer For Dolphins, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, XTC), along with Michael Manring (universal bass flame thrower) and long time Sadhappy drummer and producer, Evan Schiller.

You might call “OUTERSPACES” post-progressive or disturbingly beautiful instrumental rock... Perhaps a mixture of later daze Squarepusher with a dose of early King Crimson, add a dash of 21st century Ventures, puree it in a blender and pour over an 18” subwoofer. Then you might be in the same solar system... Or, maybe not.

Sadhappy began way back in 1989 as a Seattle based improv duo, over time becoming a collective of cutting edge musicians, including bass wiz Paul Hinklin, sax freak SKERIK (Critters Buggin’, Les Claypool, Charlie Hunter), guitarist Bill Frisell, Schiller, Manring, and now Keneally.

This is the most “produced” sounding Sadhappy disc, with many of the songs having an abstract, harmonically dense, remixed, multi-layered approach that makes more sense with each listen.. Or, maybe not. It is some sick ear candy on headphones.

    What a disc this is! I didn't really know Sadhappy and had expected something like an ambience Keneally, and on the day of receiving the album I made the gross mistake of going to bed, putting on my headphones, turning off the lights and spinning the disc, in the happy expectation of being softly carried into sleep. WRONG! Half-way through the album, I got up again feeling as if I'd taken drugs I've never taken! Luckily, Womb to Tomb calmed me down a bit. Not an album to be taken lightly. And I can't imagine how much work the band must have put into all the sampling and messing around with the WAVs (Aerocar makes me feel paranoid every time I hear it). I'm impressed out of my wits! Also, after reading a bit about the hyperbass, I can't even begin to imagine how Michael does all that tuning! Bass fans, Keneally fans, open-minded music lovers: don't wait another minute and get this! Trust me - the samples here couldn't possibly make it justice.

  • Swinging, in the pocket, timeless.

    Pretty Please (Track 1): Schiller's drum sounds are so deftly interwoven that it all sounds live. The bass riff is so solid and strong that it sounds easy. The melody, presented in several compelling ways, just gets sweeter. Bravo.

    Lorsque le trio s'est produit à St-Médard-en-Jalles (France) en 2003, je ne connaissais que Mike Keneally, ancien guitariste de F Zappa. J'ai découvert deux autres musiciens, Michael Manring et Evan Schiller. Ce concert a été une réussite et j'attendais une concrétisation sur CD. La surprise est venue enfin. Certes, c'est très différent du concert (ce n'est même pas comparable), mais c'est d'une recherche fabuleuse qui me renvoie dans mes années de jeunesse (70-80) avec des sonorités comme je ne pensais plus entendre en dehors de mes vieux vynils. Merci de cette oeuvre qui se différencie des standards actuels.

    Outerspaces is darn good (after several listenings), but I was waiting to hear something extremely unusual and it didn't happen. No surprises here, and even with Mike Keneally on guitar, this is a CD that will be passed over by the masses and the minority for the most part. Not wanting to be overly-critical, I will still say it is good, better than most in this genre... but not as "out there" as the title implies.

Evan schiller,Mike manring,Mike keneally...what can we ask more ? that cd is not made for easy listeners...maybe ! this is that music which is improving your ears everytime you're listening to... So,sit down on your confortable chair,drink your wild turkey or a glass of water,breath,close your eyes and don't be afraid : that's music,real and good music ! Enjoy it !!!!

    First off i'm so proud to be included in such a circle of bizaar, with my album abstrakt collision included in what else to hear section of sad happy, what can i say... I have been influenced and inspired to write music for many years from Micheal Manring, and Mike Keneally you guys are wow! "Music is the best" Frank Zappa. The album outerspaces is an adventure into realm and abstractionism, my kind of subconsious. I needed something new and fresh to listen to. I'm on full throttle in the studio now writin the compositions for my next album because of Outerspaces. I wanna say thanks and peace for you great piece of mind Assaad Lakkis - Abstrakt Collision
