Album Notes

Formed in 1990 by saxophonists Pat Mallinger and Cameron Pfiffner, Sabertooth explores a variety of musical genres in the quartet format of two saxophones, drums, and Hammond B3 organ. The band's repertoire includes many original compositions, some inspired from various ethnic origins. In addition, the band often performs standards and jazz classics by Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Lester Young, Mary Lou Williams, and John Coltrane. Sabertooth also performs jazz interpretations of compositions by the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, and the Allman Brothers.

Sabertooth continues its residency at Chicago's premier jazz club, the Green Mill Lounge. The band has been performing to capacity audiences every Saturday evening for sixteen years.

Special invited guests who have performed with the band have included Harry Conick Jr., Joe Lovano, Wynton Marsalis Band, Jack McDuff, Joey DeFrancesco, Bob Durrough, Kurt Elling, Jeff Parker, Jim Rotondi, Ron Perillo, George Fludas, Dana Hall, Mike Allemana, Eric Alexander, Fareed Haque, Umphrey's Mcgee, and others. Bands that have attended Sabertooth shows have included Los Lobos, Astral Project, Madeski Martin and Wood, Smashing Pumpkins, David Matthew Band, and Dark Star Orchestra, amoungst others.

"This impeccable quartet reaches a crescendo with the release of this eponymous c.d. The groups iron clad consistency is captured faithfully on this live date"

"These guys really play!"
author: Jazz Institute Of Chicago
The Sabertooth Quartet is a regular Saturday night feature at the Green Mill and this recording both confirms and justifies their longevity at this gig—these guys really play! Think of this group as the natural evolution or update of Zoot and Al meet Larry Young and Elvin. But this comparison is not really fair; the Sabertooth is based on new original voices. Dan Trudell's B-3 Hammond organ sets the stage with the just the right amount of grease and intellect. He gets a great original sound without classic quotes from the Jimmy Smith or Charles Earland school. Drummer Ted Sirota handles all of the grooves, from straight-ahead jazz to touches of R&B and a little reggae with great skill. Pat Mallinger, one of Chicago's most versatile and in-demand saxophonists is perfectly matched with fellow saxophonist Cameron Pfiffner. These guys always play at the highest level, as one voice. This is also an ambitious recording on other levels. It's recorded live at the Green Mill, after midnight
