notes
Ever since I was young I have wanted to become a composer and write my own music. In my dad’s recording studio I watched many artists come in and record albums. These artists, such as Sam Cardon, The Osmonds, and many other great musicians stood as an inspiration to me. However, I always felt there was a barrier between accomplishing my own goal of recording an album because of my inability to read music, and I always found my music inadequate compared to other musicians. For several years growing up I really struggled with self-esteem regarding both my music and my self-worth. Music was a way for me to cope with my problems and stresses in life, and I wrote a lot to help me get through.
Upon entering high school I made the mistake of getting involved with the wrong friends and turned to drugs and alcohol. I soon became addicted and reliant upon these things, as well as music, to escape life and its pressures. These wrong turns eventually wound me up serving 3 years in prison. During those 3 years I had the opportunity to have access to a piano, and I often used it to help me and those around me to get through the time. This gave me the chance to get comfortable playing around other people. While I was in prison a lot of changes occurred in me where I decided I was tired of the way I had been living. I finally believed I deserved a better life.
When I came home from prison I noticed that it was only through living a better life that I found real happiness. It was also at this time that opportunities regarding music came my way and these opportunities are what finally gave me the motivation and confidence to follow through with my dream of recording my own album, “Breaking Through”. Many of the songs on this album were written while I was serving time in prison or going through some other trial in my life. All of these songs have helped me in some way or another in my life, but the reason I chose “Breaking Through” as the title of my album is because it symbolizes the journey of me breaking through my life of addiction, insecurities, and darkness.
