notes

Chicago’s Rue Royale are set to unveil their debut long-player – capping a year which has seen them firmly establish themselves on the musical map.

Brookln and Ruth Dekker started performing together in March 2006, but have already gigged extensively, clocked up hours of radio play across the US, had one of their tunes on MTV and amassed over 100,000 plays on myspace.

The folk-pop duo, influenced by Fleetwood Mac, Sufjan Stevens, Zero 7 and the northern UK soul of Elbow and The Doves, released The Search For Where To Go EP in May 2006. Copies sold all over the world and Rue Royale fine-tuned their subtle harmonies through regular shows in Chicago and further a field.

Their eponymous full-length CD, Rue Royale, was recorded in December and is due for independent release in February.

Days after a release party at the Subterranean in Chicago on February 16, the pair will embark on a 15-date European tour. Rue Royale have established a loyal word-of-web following over the pond, featured recently on leading alternative-music UK radio stations BBC 6 Music and XFM.

Not content with racking up the miles across the UK, France, Germany, Belguim and Luxembourg, Rue Royale have their sights set on extensively touring the US on their return.

Now’s the time to join the journey...

I really enjoy listening to this CD. It's the kind you can just keep spinning a few times in a row and relax or clean the house. The sound is smooth and folky. Thumbs up.

I can't stop listening to this CD. the harmonies are so beautiful, i love to sing along. Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine & José Gonzålez are some of my favourite artists and Rue Royale is definitely a gem that fits up there with them. Kudos!

  • Beautiful Change

This CD is an instant hook. It is a beautiful CD that keeps you coming back over and over again. It is a wonderful change and sound that is unique from all others. It is a must have and an immediate “fall in love” with CD. There is something so deep and connecting about their music that it draws you in. I thank Rue Royale for creating something different and magnificent. I also thank them singing about something so important to their heart and life without rubbing your face and it and being cheesy about it. Keep up the wonderful work. This one is a no brainer, buy it!

  • Excellent Follow-up to the EP
    author: JW

While there are three holdovers from their 2006 EP (UFO, Parachutes and Lifeboats, and Even in the Darkness), I guess 7 new songs is enough to call it a full-length album. These Long Roads and On and On jump out of this release much like UFO and Parachutes did on the Search for Where to Go. Their voices mesh well and, while their music isn't very complex, it conveys a deep simplicity that flows with their lyrics. Some will knock them for making songs that don't sound too different from each other, but it's not broke, so I don't see any reason to fix it... at least not yet. An excellent follow-up to their EP and should get them some additional exposure. Hopefully that translates into more touring.
