John Russo, Clarinetist and Composer, was selected at age 19 to perform the Clarinet Concerto by Mozart with the Baltimore Symphony and has since performed throughout the U.S.A., Europe, Mexico, Russia and the Far East. His studies continued at the Curtis Institute of Music (B. M. degree). This was followed by a M. M. degree at Temple University as a Graduate Assistant. Postgraduate studies were at the Rome Festival Institute, (Italy) and with the principal clarinetist of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra. While in Rome, he was the winner of the Rome Festival Orchestra Solo Competition. He appeared as soloist, performing the Theme and Variations by Rossini- a work he revised and edited in the published clarinet and piano reduction. This work was commercially recorded together with the Piston Clarinet and Flute Concerti together with flutist, Samuel Baron. His compositions are available by more than six publishing firms, including Theodore Presser and Ludwig Music Company. He has performed/recorded with the members of the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and as soloist with other prestigious Orchestras in Germany, Hungary, Mexico, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine.
Praise has come from numerous colleagues: Lukas Foss, who has called Mr. Russo, “a virtuoso clarinetist”...and has stated “your own music is skillful and musical as ever”...“ Composer, Norman Dello Joio has commented on hearing Russo’s recordings, “I am struck by the high level of his technical proficiency and the rare quality of his musicianship.” Composer Elliot Carter wrote of the Russo/Ignacio recording of his Pastoral, “I am very pleased with their performance. They make the work come alive with their imaginative interpretation”.
Mr. Russo has taught at Temple University, Combs College of Music and the Philadelphia University of Performing Arts, during which time his activities included presenting master classes, solo appearances and numerous commercial recordings, concurrently acting as Artistic Director of the CONTEMPORARY RECORD SOCIETY and the CRS Artists record label. He has continued as a clinician and consultant for three prestigious clarinet manufacturers. He currently continues in this capacity, giving master classes throughout the United States and abroad. Russo is a Rico International artist representing these exceptional reeds in his recordings and concerts. Extensive guest appearances have included numerous universities, performing arts series, symphony orchestras and conservatories of music. In 1991 Unam University of Mexico City presented Russo with the award, La Escuela Nacional de Musica extiende el presente RECONOCIMIENTO for his Master Class. He has also given numerous Master Classes, clinics and engagements outside the USA and in Canada and Philippines, among other countries.
John Russo and Lydia Walton Ignacio, pianist established the CHAMBER ART SOLOISTS, in 1981, which represent numerous commercial recordings on compact disc. Many of these recordings are of compositions from the 17th Century to the present and have been documented as “World Premier” performances. Russo is considered the most prominent recording artist of his generation on the clarinet.
