”..while sounding hauntingly like Django, Ross Hubbell has developed his own unique sound, repertoire, and style in the world of Gypsy Jazz.” –All Frets Magazine

Band Bio:

The Ross Hubbell Trio plays acoustic swing in the Chicago and Northern Indiana regions. Over the past couple of years they have gained a reputation for representing the finest in acoustic swing and Gypsy Jazz. Their largest influence is Django Reinhardt, but they also draw from their contemporaries in the field such as the Robin Nolan Trio, Harmonious Wail and Alfonso Ponticelli. They have shared the stage with the latter three in the past, and even feature former Harmonious Wail bass player John Mesoloras on their latest release. Essentially, their mission is to not only recreate the exciting, driving, swinging sound of Django Reinhardt, but to introduce the style to audiences who might not typically be exposed to this style of music.

Ross Hubbell, solo guitarist in the group cut his chops at Berklee College of Music. He has been playing professionally for 28 years, and even had the opportunity to study with Joe Pass in 1986. Recently he has been gaining a reputation as one of the finest soloists in Chicago, and is known as a master of swing, bebop, solo jazz and gypsy jazz guitar. World class banjo virtuoso Buddy Wachter recently said, "I love the way Ross plays!" Outside of the Ross Hubbell Trio, Ross has played most recently, and currently, with the Vintage Jazz Quintet.

Larry Rutan, rhythm guitarist in the group has been playing and performing since he was a young kid. Starting out on drums, and later migrating to guitar and bass, he has always been a rhythm section player. He was once dubbed "rhythm player to the stars" for his frequent appearances backing up other musicians. Larry has worked in the past with dozens of groups, most recently and currently with the Barb City Stompers, Vintage Jazz Quintet and the Swing Dogs, but in his younger years he worked with many well known rock bands including Hardtimes who shared the stage with Molly Hatchet, Hank Williams Jr., Bellamy Brothers, the Byrds and Badfinger.

The group currently has two bass players sharing the role. The first is John Mesoloras, formerly of Harmonious Wail, who played bass on all tracks of the latest CD. His solid style and fine tuned technique have made him one of the most popular on call musicians in the Chicago/Madison area. The second bass player is John Biegel of Vintage Jazz Quintet. John is a self-taught bass player with plenty of experience on his own, and plenty of experience playing with Ross and Larry, which definitely shows.
