Hawaii Stage Diva Triumphs
author: Phillip SloaneHawaii's fulsome and enchanting stage musical presence Roslyn has exploded as a serious writer and producer of albums for everyone. "On This Journey" is a triumph of her growth as an artist, and just about any listener will swoon - no lie. Everyone? "Impossible" my industry pundits assured me when I call on them for quotes. "You can't please everyone in these times of disparate fragments of markets and multi, new and old media channels," one said just now on-cel. "Oh, no?" I said, "listen to Roz." She did, and my crusty old pal from Nashville gaped. "Learn To Live" is so good I can imagine listening to it all day around the house, or playing it for my pro jazz and classical-player friends. Even, "whole familes" would get caught and couldn't stop listening. Little kids and boyfriends. Gramma. You can't help falling in love with this voice, and with this song. Sounds like maybe in some magical realm Joni Mitchell melded with Kelly Clarkson and became one singer-songwriter who said "OK, now for a completely new style, and Joni you write, Kelly you sing." Swooning is a good thing these days, when it's hard to figure out who is going to scam or slime you next. Roslyn sounds like she comes from that most tender and secret place in your heart; that place you thought you couldn't get back to. "I miss You" seems like today's best TOP40, only more filling emotionally; taking you into that aching, pleasure-place of old again. The "Hearts Full Of Hope" title seems like maybe a little corny, but no. It's a great stage musical excusrsion that made me think I was hearing one of Claude-Michel Schönberg's missing tracks from Les Miserables. You think I am kidding? And if the great song weren't enough, you ever heard Andrea McArdle (Broadway's original Annie) sing Fantine's "I Dreamed A Dream?" Roz does that level of crooning on her own song. "I Will Follow You" from her last album is simply and unutterably ravishing. But no matter : "When I Think Of You" on this new album is even better, if that's possible. If these lyrics were not Christian, I know the same thing would happen : a great blue-sea wave swept up under my heart and it soared into the air. In this track Roslyn opens all her voices as she does onstage, and steps up alongside even McArdle's performances in Sam Mendes' updated version of Cabaret, when the great Andrea made audiences write into their local papers - in times when newspapers are supposed to be fading. This is Roz, full boat, belting with the best, and maybe a little better in the region of the heart. The Christian marketplace is big and ignored by the "cool." Listen to what those folks are missing! Musical challenge and interest, and deep feeling in one song. "On This Journey" can give you something deeply fine, and with her previous two records (The Wishing Tree, Stepping Stones) you can trace the growth in this now mature, contagious singer-songwriter. The complete artist. Five stars. DON'T miss. contributing entertainment writer, San Jose Mercury News, California
