notes
Comparisons don't come easily. The Guardian called Rosie's sound a blend of "jazz, folk and torch song"; Q described it as "the sort of music Roni Size might be making if he'd discovered Joni Mitchell instead of drum machines. With Austrian co-writer Bernd Rest, "one of the most accomplished guitarists in Europe" (The Tip Sheet), and an amazing band,"the same inspired posse that recently brought Ronnie Scott's its feet" (Straight No Chaser), Rosie Brown is carving out her own niche. At their south London studio, Brown and Rest have set up Stück Records, where they produced their critically acclaimed debut album By The Blue. The accomplished personnel on the album includes
Rosie Brown (vocals & guitar)
Bernd Rest (guitars)
Andy Hamill (double bass)
Marcus Cummins (soprano sax)
Paul May (drums)
Markus Marageter (keyboards)
"Superior musical minds following their hearts... this is the real McCoy" Mojo
"Much more than the latest cute girl with a guitar" **** Q
"A truly amazing voice" **** What's On
"This sparkling record will hearten those who thought that the kind of pastoral arranging skills with which Robert Kirby furnished Nick Drake were history. The flutes on Odessa, bass clarinet on Darn Sing Spin and soprano sax on album stand-out Catch evince superior musical brains following their hearts..." Mojo
"Spellbinding... By The Blue heralds the arrival of a major new talent" HMV Choice
"Delicately realised... an assured blend of cool pop, jazz and warm soul" Time Out
"Pure chill... The audience is putty in her hands" **** The List, Edinburgh
"Seductive, sublime, sensuous... " ***** Three Weeks
"She fuels her fans with silky, slow-burning jazz-pop" **** The Scotsman
"Great voice, well-crafted songs, lovely lyrics" The Sunday Times Magazine
"What a pleasure to be surrounded by music made by such sympathetic people" Charlie Gillett, BBC London
New album CLOCKS AND CLOUDS released October 2004. Embracing!
author: Disc-ussionsBrown evokes Maria Muldaur but adds an ECM sheen. Great late-night stuff, perfect for midnight walks on the beach.

pop music on subtle jazz oriented instrumentation
author: A first time buyerGreat CD...the style of this music is pop, but the instrumentation is something that reminds me of ECM type european jazz/folk. I like the subtle and syncopated drumming on pop music. The singer's voice is brilliant as well, reminding me of Louise Rhodes (from Lamb) and Suzanne Vega at times (or in between).
