Danny Kaye's recording of Mommy, Gimme a Drinka Water!
Music and Lyrics by Milton Schafer had a profound musical effect on me in 1958 when I was a wee lad of six. The sound of him singing with the orchestra helped shape my whole way of hearing music. I had found the sheet music book at a garage sale in San Francisco, and I had many times thought about doing a version of it. The sheet music was pretty useless, so I just used my ears and rebuilt the work from scratch while learning how to use a sequencer, computer, and all that modern stuff. I basically used just one sound source: an Emu Proteus2XR Orchestral Module (This was 1996). Then, I overdubbed real Trumpets, Drums, some Percussion, etc. and then, went to a "real" studio to add the vocals. Because of the brevity of the material, I came up with the idea of having the music tracks come after the vocals, so now, one can either listen, or sing along! I hope you enjoy this musical masterpiece by this great composer.

This recording is dedicated to the memory of Dorothy Rosengarden (my Mommy).

Thank you Mr. Rosengarten for making it possible for me to share the wonderful songs of my childhood with my almost 5-year old, who like the boy in the song insists he's already 5. Like all the other reviewers, Danny Kaye's album is a cherished part of my childhood memories, and I really appreciate the precious gift you made to be make it possible to share these with my son. This is a beautiful album and you don't have to have grown up with the original to enjoy sharing many hours of pure joy listening to this one with your children

Fabulous tribute

I played the original Danny Kaye record constantly when I was 4 and memorized every song. Forty five years later, it's great to find this CD. It brought tears to my eyes. A very accurate duplication of the original orchestration using current electronic technology, and a great tribute to Danny Kaye. Thanks for doing this.

I love it! Thanks for taking the time to make the CD.

Thank you so much; It was in the '50's when I first heard the Danny Kay album; I was a kid and listened to it over over and over. I loved it then and I love it now; it's brought memories of a very happy time and has me smiling. My college roommates used to laugh when I sang the songs, wish I could forward this to them now. Again, Thank you so much!!

And After Only 40 Years Of Waiting

I had the original Danny Kaye album years ago, but lost it. I could never find a replacement on the internet until I found this site. The artist did such a good job recreating what I remember, so much so that when I listened to the music samples, I thought I was listening to Danny. Then I read that it was a recreation. Great Great Job. Just as good or better than the original

like reliving my childhood!

I've been desperately trying to replace my broken lp of the original Danny Kaye version to no avail. When I found this new version, I was skeptical, but gave it a chance and I am so glad I did. It is a faithful rendering of a classic album, and although noone can replace Danny Kaye, Neil does a wonderful tribute to him and this great collection of songs. Thank you!

What memories this brought back. My kids love it!

I had 10 brothers and sisters and we all seem to remember these songs by heart as we listened to the record ALL THE TIME. It sounds just like the original. My own kids have enjoyed listening to it and are on their way to memorizing it too.

Great rendition of the original!

I had been singing these songs to my 6 yr. old for some time. The expression on his face was priceless the first time he listened to the CD! He was excited to already know alot of the words and could hum along.

I bought this CD for our grandson for his fifth birthday. Our kids LOVED the original Danny Kaye record when they were little, and I was disappointed that the original album was no longer available. I am so glad Neil Rosengarden made this album so true to the original! Thank you for making these wonderful songs available for the next generation of kids!
