notes

[NOTE: highly recommended by the CD Baby staff]

If you're reading this, you are probably asking, "Who the #(@#**!@#!# ARE you, Rogue Rob, is and WHY do you have a CD?! And is that even your real name?!" Well, lemme tell ya.

I'm a musician (piano) and a writer, originally from NYC, now living in the high desert in California, where I'm editing my first novel, yer basic bondage tome which I've been working on diligently since the Trojan War. Late last year, however, technology beckoned, for as I looked up, bleary-eyed, from my cobweb-ridden desk here in my hole in my dungeon, I noticed my computer, slowly gathering dust. I also noticed that if I pulled my desk a little to the left and then to the right again, I could actually drag my rusty leg irons to the keyboard. I found my way online somehow, and it was there that I discovered an entire world of music to be made. I discovered samples.

So now, instead of working on the ol' magnum opus (the book, the book), I was downloading these magical new outlets of creative expression (the samples, the samples) and remixing other people's music, then recording the mixes onto my trusty cassette player, which I could then take to bed with me and listen to in my trusty earphones (the only thing in the house NOT gathering dust). They were good. Really good. In just a few weeks I began taking UNrelated samples and combining them in new, perverse ways, to create original sampled mixes. These were even better. And being a humanitarian at heart (ok, so I'm a show-off Leo), I felt the overpowering need to share them with my fellow sentient beings.

I had, believe it or not, created two websites during my self-imposed dungeon exile(www.rogueunderground.org and www.cardazoid.com). So I put up a room at both of 'em called RogueMix and started uploading the music there. It was very well received. "So when's yer cd comin' out?" people would ask me.

So I did one. Here by overwhelming demand (ok, it was 3 people), is a decent representation of my electronic musical output of the past 9 months. I'm into all kinds of music - rock, blues, soul, jazz, experimental (check out Underground Rapsody and No Crackers, in particular), sitar, clanging chains (well, that's a very personal thing)...and if you hear the cd, you'll notice I'm extremely partial to jungle drums (a primal Leo thing, for sure). This cross-section of tastes is represented on the cd.

I'm already working on Volume Two (have 6 tracks for it), and it should be out by August (if I can wait THAT long - I really love doing this, as you probably have gathered). So jump on my bandwagon. I need the cash to buy more paper and quill pen ink. (Ok, ok...I'm using it to install a decent whip rack, who am I kidding.)

Robby C. (ok, so Rogue Rob isn't my real name, but you knew that) - 6/1/2000

Just wanted to add this: RogueMix Volume Two is out NOW! If you want more of me (musically, that is), go to the link, here at CD Baby. And thanks to everyone who so favorably reviewed me here, I truly appreciate it. - Robby C. 1/10/2001

1/14/07 - I've changed the covers for both RogueMix volume 1 and RogueMix volume 2 (I took out the 2000 reference and added titles to them, since RogueMix volume 3 has a title and I wanted to be consistent). Workin' on volume 3 now, so hang in for me.

  • A Musical Experience Tantamount to Skinny Dipping
    author: Brad Keene

Inspired, provoking, and enlightening, this infectious collection from the infamous Rogue Rob could well indeed kick start a revolution. It's the perfect gift for the reclusive neighbors down the block, gregarious girl scouts selling over-priced cookies, and everyone who enjoys bowling in semi-darkness while drinking imported beer. If you don't own a copy, you might as well change your name and disappear from society. So buy two and give one to the person you love.

  • Revelling and reviewing at the PARTY.

Can't sign off without my two cents worth. Rogue Rob's CD, Roguemix 2000 will blow you away from the very first hint of sound when Underground Rhaposdy begins to the last lingering essence of Finest Hour. A great combination of quality and quantity, since the CD is over an hour long.

  • This cd is my new favorite, replacing Santana

Hi from the party - just wanted to add that there's a really funny message from Rogue around the rim of the cd. We laughed. Then we put the cd on and we danced. We're still dancing.

  • We're having a RogueMix cd party right now!
    author: Angela And Bill

Hi, CD Baby visitors! We are having a party right now to celebrate this cd! We're listening to it as we write this! We think you would like it too. It has a lot of great stuff goin' on. It's hard to believe it was done with a computer and samples, it sounds like a studio cd. Rogue Rob rules!

  • This music is cool, I love it

I've been a Rogue Rob fan since Rogue Underground started at Geocities. I love the site, especially the animated cards and the movies. I love Rogue's music too. This cd is great. I like how it's really long, and I like the extra song, at the end, Finest Hour. This song isn't at Rogue Underground at all, only on the cd. So buy it! :)

  • Geesh........and more!!!!!!!

  • Well, well, well - pleasantly pleased by this effort

I learned about this cd from a friend of mine, who'd gotten a preview copy from Rogue Rob, and halfway through the very first track, the sublime Underground Rapsody, I was hooked. There are two types of tracks on this cd - remixes of music by other artists, all of which are beautifully rendered; my personal favorites are Moby's Natural Blues and Civilization's Save Our Souls (over 13 minutes and brilliant) - and Rogue's original mixes, which are made up of samples from various sources and combined in very unique ways. There is even a Rogue vocal sample, on the edgy track called Scrunch. My personal favorite - although this keeps changing every time I hear the cd, which has a very high replay value, it's very addictive - has to be the obscenely creative track called No Crackers, which features the voice of "Wallace" of Wallace-and-Gromit fame: this track tells an actual story within its short timeframe, with a beginning, middle and end. It is truly wonderful, witty and wry. Rogue Rob has wit to spare, a magnificent sense of build, the sensibility and sensitivity of a true artist. This comes across in every facet of this lavor of love, including the obviously thought-out and effective order in which the tracks are placed, creating a cohesive, satisfying musical experience for any listener. Volume Two cannot be available soon enough.
