notes

Drummer Robin Russell is world renowned and respected for his recorded and performance contributions with`70s funk/soul masters New Birth and their primarily instrumental counterpart The Nite-Liters. The Birthday album by New Birth and Anal-Y-Sis by The Nite-Liters were the first of many albums Robin recorded with those incomparable bands. Robin's distinctively tasteful yet muscular drumming can be heard on such New Birth classics as, Got to Get a Knutt, Wildflower, I Can Understand It, Dream Merchant and Keep on Doing It - all contained on the outstanding RCA compilation, The Very Best of The New Birth, Inc. In the recent years, Robin's drum beats have also been sampled by such hip-hop artists as A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, De La Soul, Big Daddy Kane, Fat Joe, the list goes on, and most recently on Unpredictable, the new hit titled CD by Jamie Foxx.

Prior to joining New Birth, Robin gigged with and trained under Johnny Guitar Watson, who Robin proclaims as his musical godfather. The engagements with Mr. Watson led Robin to the drum throne for the one and only Little Richard, with whom Robin can be seen in the classic video, The London Rock and Roll Show, filmed at Wembley Stadium. In his post-New Birth years, Robin toured the USA and Europe with disco giant Sylvester, reunited with Mr. Watson for gigs, and played for various other artists including Richard Berry, the composer of Louie, Louie. Robin is currently composing original works, giving private drum lessons, has recently reunited with New Birth for performances, and has been performing with Jud Duncan, Brad Pie, and other well known artists.

All drum parts on this CD were conceived and written by Robin in the serene surroundings of L.A.'s fabled Griffith Park, where Robin faithfully engages in sunrise to sunset sessions, nurturing his spirit, wood-shedding, composing and enjoying Mother Nature. This CD is a document of those vibrations..........A. Scott Galloway - Music Editor - Urban Network Magazine

I had the pleasure of working with Robin, so I know how powerful and creative he is, its so good to hear him on a CD, now more and more music lovers can enjoy real drums being played by a real great musician and person....

  • A great artists painting his picture in nature, with sound...
    author: A Love Supreme

It's my opinion that "Drum Beats" could be sold at health food stores as music that has to power to heal! The grooves on that CD are life altering and anyone who has heard it has been changed for the better in the process. I know the power of drumming first hand and that CD to me is up there with Olatunji's Drums of Passion, Tito Puente's Top Percussion, and A Love Supreme.

  • A Master Drummer, communing with nature, the elements, and beyond!!!
    author: Michael Dubin

If you want to hear what drumming is really all about, all you have to do is listen to Robin Russell's "DRUM BEATS." Robin transcends the instrument and gets into surfing the deepest waves of sound you will ever hear. And all of this is done outside in the elements with no safety net! Robin is the Laird Hamilton (Big Wave Surfer) of Drumming!!!!

  • musical, harmonic and rythmic

    author: Marsha Powell

The drum beats on this CD moved me and everyone in our office. The rhythms, the snares, the massive combinations and different flows were fabulous. The beats transcend all genres of music. I can’t want for the next CD.

  • good first time CD . professionally done and well presented.
    author: vance tenort

I told robin that i thought he would have played some beats that could be sampled or a kind of learning CD . IT IS WHAT HE WANTED, A DAY AT THE PARK WITH ROB. I'M SURE THAT HIS NEXT ONE WILL BE MORE OF A COMMERCIAL SUCCESS.

  • I love it.
    author: Tony Churchill

I think this CD is long overdue. It is a great tool for someone to study and practice playing the drums. You can feel the spirit flowing through the beats.
