This is Robert Peckman’s first release for Bonedog Records and under his own name. “Pecky” recorded under various names in the 60’s and charted as “Q” for Epic Records in the 70’s. These fourteen self-penned songs rely heavily on 60s/70s R&B and Soul roots but still have a contemporary feel. Peckman’s vocals are “Im-Peck-Able and the overall project has a cohesiveness rarely seen today. An added bonus is the two song cameo of Stax recording artist Johnny Daye, his first recording in nearly forty years.

  • real soul music made in 2007 - a treat for soul fans

    Old school? It's still new to those who want their soul music soulful. It's a delight to see that this type of music is being made in 2007. Special treats are "A man must stand for something" (could have been written by Joe Tex), "Hey John R", a tasteful homage to the legendary Nashville radio DJ, featuring an extra funky southern soul style horn arrangement, "Please come home", a cleverly produced jumpy uptempo soul number, and, to me the cherry on the cake, "Let's talk it over", a moody beat ballad featuring the great Johnny Daye, the man who gave the world some of the greatest soul singles in the 60's, including what could well be Stax Records' all time finest ballad, "Stay baby stay". It's great to hear Johnny sing today; he has lost nothing of his voice quality. Any chance of a full new CD by Johnny Daye? All in all, a great soul CD – thanks to Robert Peckman and the band, and to Bonedog records for making it possible.

    If you are a fan, like I am of old school soul and R/B, then this CD is a rare treat. Funky bass, nice horn parts, catchy lyrics. [Hey, get your shoes on, lets dance.] I include this among my top ten for this year. Don't believe me? Just take a listen.

    Them folks at Bonedog Records have done it again with another Staxy Soul/Blues record- this time by Robert Peckman. "Stirrin' Up Bees" (****) is Peckman's first disc under his own name but his resume includes singing lead on the disco group Q's LP "Dancin' Man", which had a Top 23 Pop hit with the title cut. Prior to this he sang for the groups Mike And Ike and Sparkz. "Bees" kicks off with a Funky slider called "Put It In The Pocket" featuring delicious horns by Don Donohoe & Robert Klein. Irresistible. The hilarious, thesaurus-raiding "Bamboozled" follows with some loose-jointed piano by Jimmy Britton. Still both these winners are trumped by the title cut which includes the uber-clever line describing a date that ended without a "payoff": "It's like stirrin' up bees...and not getting any honey! Like robbing a bank and not getting any money/Like telling a joke that's not even funny". Sorry Robert, but good for her! Marry the girl first. I immediately recognized track 4, "A Man Must Stand For Something". It was first covered by labelmate Billy Price but it's equally strong here. As a bonus "Bees" features the return of former Stax artist Johnny Daye to sing on two cuts ("Let's Talk It Over" & "Stop And Take A Look") though Peckman is a perfectly capable singer on his own.This is gritty, earnest blues-eyed Soul/Blues music at it's zenith.
