notes

Tony nominee Alice Ripley reveals a glittering new facet to her multiple-act life with the release of OUTTASITE, a punchy pop rock CD by her band RIPLEY. Co-produced by Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Clem Snide), OUTTASITE features Ripley on vocals and guitar, Shannon Ford (formerly of the Danny Gatton band) on drums, and Christopher Schelling on keyboards.

Following the release of the band's self-titled EP in 2004, they went back into the (now) late great Fireproof Studios in Red Hook, Brooklyn to record these eleven new songs. The result retains the jangle and crunch of the five-song EP, but it is even more deeply layered and varied. And louder.

Known for her stage roles in the cult classic Side Show and the rock hits The Who’s Tommy and The Rocky Horror Show, Ripley recently relocated to Los Angeles to write music full time. She notes, "Voicing a loud opinion is a creative luxury that is mostly off-limits to an actor." But it's a necessity if you’re going to make noise that’s a potent mix of Iggy Pop and Marilyn Monroe.

The combination of wittily sardonic, rawly emotional lyrics, haunting melodies and killer licks keep the band tight but raucous, shimmering around the powerful wall of vocals that define the sound of RIPLEY.

  • Powerful, brassy, uninhibited fun! Best Ripley work yet.

I would have named this album "Bodacious." It's a brain break-through. Boiler-plate pop-rock groups Be Gone!!! The music is catchy with addictive "actual" melodies that take turns popping into my head. Alice Ripley's guitars are fast, fun and spiky. Chris Schelling's keyboards unify the sound. And, oh those drums . . . brace yourself when Shannon Ford's beat gets franticly delirious. Better yet, sing and scream along! Alice can sing anything. Anything. Buy the album to hear her express herself. Her intriguing lyrics make me curious to know "the rest of the story." The beautiful instrumental at the end of the CD seems reflective, like a well-deserved break after a strenuous life-performance.
