notes

There's no mistaking Jerry Riopelle's distinctive brand of hard driving roots rock. Riopelle's music is a late-night joy ride down a hot desert highway, and to enjoy it to its fullest, you'd better roll down the windows and turn it up!

Riopelle's music reflects a genuine lyrical honesty with heavy doses of rhythm and blues, rock and country flavored with a unique mix of jazz and reggae sounds. Riopelle is an artist whose work, both in the studio and on the stage, has always refused to be categorized. His natural ability to draw from different contemporary styles while utilizing wide ranging instrumental ideas and rhythmic variations gives the Riopelle sound a very distinct character.

This 4 CD anthology collection, "The Works / 1970-2000" spans 30 years of Riopelle's career as a solo artist.
While listening to this music, you can be sure of one thing: Riopelle and his band have ALWAYS delivered the goods.

Very high quality production and for those Ex-Pat Arizonans like me who have been trying for some time to find a way to re-access this artist in a modern medium, this really is the way to go and worth the price.

Back in 1975 (in Mn) I was listening to some talented Southwest song writters like Guy Clark "Old No. 1" and Jerry Jeff Walker "Viva Terlingua" when a friend put on Jerry Riopelle "Take a Chance" and told me I'd like it. Well, it turned out to be one of my favorites and I really missed hearing the record when CD's took over my music libary. Now I have it again and it was worth $50 just to get "Take a Chance", the rest are just all a bonus for me. A great era of music history lives on once again with "The Works".

  • riopelle in the round
    author: david

having attended over 10 of Jerry's new years eve shows at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, I was unfortunate to miss the brief release of his "in the round" recording nearly a decade ago. When I heard he was re-releasing it, well, anyone who went to even a couple of those shows understands the nostalgic value of his performances there. As to a review of the CD itself - it was well worth the wait! In fact, I've NEVER written a review of anything I've bought, ever! But this was a no-brainer for me. To the rest of the minions, all I can say is.......GO GET IT!

  • THE WORKS & IN THE ROUND
    author: Julie Wildermuth

YAHOO…. A long time in coming, but definitely worth the wait! Some cuts from "In The Round" would have been nice for those of us who spent many New Years Eves at the Celebrity from 74 to the 80’s. I am Arizona Born and bred and have lived in Arizona for 50 years. How could you not LOVE JERRY RIOPELLE. Thanks Babe….

  • The Works

  • author: Charles Lee

    author: Keri(Coffey) Beverage

Wow, I took the time to read all the reviews, you can bet this will soon be in my collection! I found Jerry's UTube site and River On The Run began playing and I began crying. It's been 28 yrs. since I've been deprived of this awesome music. Moved from Phx. (Celebrity Theater) to San Diego in '80 and found the West Coast too had been deprived. I can still sing along to my ol' favorites. My sister just sent me a Saving Grace poster so I'll have to turn my sister on to this also, THANK YOU! for ended this long quest of mine! Now, to relax and listen and remember when....

SO EXCELLENT! I love Jerry, but you know how it is - the ex got the albums when we split. I've had his songs on my mind ever since & it's great to be able to dance around my living room with 'em again! (I can't just LISTEN to Jerry's music, I gotta MOVE! It gets into your very bones...) This is a wonderful compilation & I'm so happy I found it here at CDBaby! Thanks!

What a great collection of music for J. Riopelle. It takes me back to my Arizona roots, and warms me up while I'm in this Ohio snow. This is just good kick back party music that reminds me of all those hot desert nights!

  • Thank God!!!
    author: Jacque

I love Jerry Riopelle!!! Being from Arizona and being Jerry was favorite there for years and being I saw him at least 20 times live, when I moved to New York and all my Jerry albums got lost, I was heartbroken. For years I have been searching for his music and now finally I can relive the amazing moments of Jerry and his music. Thank you very much!!!!!

  • Jerry Riopelle
    author: Old Stoner

I kicked back "Too-stoned style", threw this on the CD player, and I was transported back to the Pawnbroker and some of the finest memories of my life, most of which circulate around Jerry Riopelle, Bob Meighan, and then the Air Brothers. Now, if we can just add those to the collection! Life is good.

  • The Works
    author: Gail Davis

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have been haunted by the sounds of Jerry Riopelle for some 30 years now. When I came upon CDBaby and found The Works, I could hardly contain myself! My only suggestion would be to offer overnight shipping...It was one of the longest 5 days in my life! (but well worth it)... This CD has made my new year!

  • Six Stars, C'mon
    author: Bill Moriarty

So Young indeed. The only thing more amazing than Jerry's live shows and his incredible songs is how the hell he never got the acclaim he so richly deserves. Just shows how much luck has to do with who makes it in the music business. As a writer Jerry crafts lyrics in the same league as Springsteen and his music is every bit as evocative. In Tucson the mid-70's Jerry would play a three night stand somewhere (two shows a night)and you'd see many of the same folks each night drinkin' it in. Just the consummate showman. Thanks for putting this compilation out so we can introduce our friends and kids to a one-of-kind artist in every way.

  • Thanks Jerry and Friends!
    author: Crash

I've waited so long for this CD and it has finally happened. Thank you for filling that void in my preferred artists collection once and for all! The quality sounds great and the songs are just as enjoyable today as they were 30 years ago!

  • Thank YOU!!!

Not listening to Jerry Riopelle for me is like giving my ears a musical lobotomy. Well that's what I've had for many years now. His music defined the era I lived in. The collection is well done, the sound is just like I remember it only without the pops and crackles of the vinyl. Walkin' on Water still gets my blood pumping and my feet dancing. This purchase was two collections for 4 fans. My wife used to help out back stage for his concerts at the Celebrity Theater. One of my wife's co-workers and her husband loved the music and so we went together on the purchase and none of us are disappointed. Love ya Jerry!

  • LOVE Jerry Riopelle!
    author: Lisa

Where do I begin? I've been a Riopelle fan since the 70's...he was a staple at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix for MANY New Year's. Every new person I would take for a show year after year became a fan as well. How could you not? I soooo missed listening to Jerry's music when I got rid of my turntable...still have the albums, but there was no Riopelle on CD until now. Thanks Paul for compiling your Dad's music and putting it on CD for all of us Riopelle fans!! If you're not in Phoenix for New Year's, you'll be missing out!! This Works CD project is heaven sent, if you love Riopelle's music, you'll fall in love with this CD set!!! :-)

  • The works Jerry Riopelle
    author: Tina Fushek

I bought this cd for my husband for Christmas but was so excited I gave it to him the day it arrived. He loves it. We both do. I looked a few years back when we converted to a cd player but was told his music was not on cd, so we are thrilled that this was finally done. We have tickets to see Jerrry Riopelle for New Years in Phoenix. We used to go to the New Years concert years ago and can't wait to see him again. Tina Fushek.

  • Riopelle/The Works
    author: Barb

Jerry does not disappoint in the anthology collection. Jerry was a mainstay in Northern Arizona University and the Phoenix Valley. I saw him when the opportunity arose. The collection brought back great memories. His music brings a smile to my face and makes the trips in my car feel shorter and sweeter. Amazing music...amazing musician.

    Fantastic

  • author: John Beachboard

It was great to find this album. I had listened to Jerry back in the 70s and had his stuff on records. As I transitioned to CDs I finally sort of lost the music. While I sort of miss the hearing the selections in the album formats that I was used to listening to, the remastering of these tunes is excellent. Sweet Naomi never sounded so fine!!

  • author: hank burgunder

It is so great to hear All of this great material again, I can`t get over it. I haven`t listened to anything else in the last ten days and don`t intend to for many to come. Saw Jerry and his son in `03 with Neil Young and we`re looking forward to the New Years Eve show at the Dodge in a few weeks. `Til then I`ll be rockin` out to 'The Works'

    author: Carl Capanna

Nothing brings back better memories than Jerry Riopelle at the club on Tanque verde in Tucson on a Friday night! (Or the Palamino in Los Angeles!)I couldn't believe almost everything in one set. These tunes have been a constant for me since the 70's (I had to tape my vinyl to cassette several times as I kept wearing them out or friends would take em!) LOVE TO HEAR THESE TUNES! Thanks for putting them all in one set. Jerry, you need to tour again! Always loved the shows and would love to see another few hundred!

    author: Regon

OH YEAH.................AT LAST have seen him in Amsterdam, 70's, GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! (excuse me for my english, i am not a native, native speaker that is)

  • WHERE HAS THIS BEEN?!
    author: Kim Markworth

Saw Riopelle at least ten times growing up in Phoenix... out here in Washington, DC nobody knows who he is, which translates to nobody to share the greatness and nostalgia with. Six years ago I made CDs of all the albums so I could rip them for my MP3 player, so they've been shuffling up regularly all this time. But it's so fabulous to hear them all so clearly (sans the occasional pop) -- I never thought I would. Bonus to have them all in one place. THANK YOU, Paul!

  • GET IT NOW!!! It's sweet!
    author: Sean

I am only 15, and my dad bought this set. Man, it's amazing. Has all his albums smoooshed into 4 discs. This was mastered in Phoenix, and the sound is sweet. I highly recomend this set. get it

  • Better than I expected.
    author: Kevin Miiller

I was asking everyone I bumped into from those days if they remembered Riopelle. More importantly if they had any of his music. My vinyl did not make it back from NAU. What a GREAT surprise to find this site and even better to find four cds. Thank you for taking me back to high school.

  • Great CD set - Great Artist. So glad this finally came out!
    author: Andy Wolfsberg

Riopell on a 4 CD set!!! Tooo cool. This is terrific music from a terrific artist. Brings back great memories from concerts in Old Tucson and the Celebrity in Phx, back when I used to live in AZ. This music defined my AZ experience and now it's great to hear it again. The comments about each song are pretty special, too. Thanks Jerry!

So glad to see this. Just wish it had been last year. I searched & paid $80 to get the Saving Grace album that had been put on CD. This was so much better!! Also, CD Baby is great. I loved their confirmation (very funny) and the CD arrived within 2 days!! Thanks Jerry!!

  • Very grateful to finally have the whole collection again!!
    author: Kelly

This collection is truly a priceless gem for me. A few years back I googled Riopelle to see if I could locate any CDs of his recordings and all that came up was a website in France!?!(no connection)I am thrilled to have his complete collection plus the bonus tunes. The quality of the recordings is exceptional. I just hope he plans more shows in the Valley, I haven't seen him live since the Tostito's salsa challenge in '03.

  • My search has finally ended. Thanks Jerry and CD Baby!!
    author: Jerry Kammer

I first heard Jerry Riopelle's Saving Grace back in the 70's on KSHE 95 a progressive rock radio station in St.Louis. My little brother made off with my vinyl copy and ever since I have been trying to find it again. This collection has ended my search and turned me on to a lot of other great Riopelle tunes that I never had heard before. Many thanks to CD Baby and the Riopelle clan for this unique and wonderful collection. I will be telling all my friends about it too. BTW, any chance of new Jerry Riopelle stuff coming out?

  • I never thought I could find anything by Jerry Riopelle!

I have been a fan since I saw Jerry at the U of A Main Auditorium in 1980. I really like the layout and sound quality of this CD set. And of course the music too!! Any chance that the live album "In The Round" (I think) will make it to CD?

  • Absolutely love the songs and the memories they give listening

I have been a Jerry Riopelle fan for 30+ years I tell everybody about how great he is. Like everyone else, I think he should have been a bigger star. The CD with all the songs is just fantastic

Back in the day, my friends and I played our albums over and over on a regular basis, or in preparation for Jerry's concerts. Moved to Texas in 1980 and haved shared this music with my now husband and others, who love this music as much as I do. On almost every visit back to Phoenix, I would look for CD's and buy whatever I could find. Thanks to everyone who saw the need to put this collection together for the fans and the world, and for the photos and history that was included. Love to Jerry, David, the band, and all who were involved over the years.

  • finally !
    author: françois

I have been waiting for this for more than 15 years. Not that I will do away the vinyls, as they kept me company during more than 30 years. This is the complete work of one of the most underrated singer-songwriter-rockers in the history of rock music, and it is at the level of Springsteen and co.Not to be missed.

  • Fountain of Youth Rediscovered!

Fabulous sound quality! I've never heard Jerry sans that ol' vinyl pop'n'hiss, and it had been nearly 30 years since I even had that! Every tune is a winner. Definately my favorite CD purchase this year. I feel 25 years younger! Thanks CD Baby!

    author: Crooked Feather Kathee

It takes me back to every moment back in Tucson. The best of every album I have is covered on this CD set. What a pleasure! It is a definite MUST HAVE for a Jerry fan. I am the one person that most of my friends can rely on for their Riopelle "fix" when they pass through town. It usually means pulling out the turntable... not now! Brilliant ! It just never gets old.

THe CD is Great. THe sound quality is very good, and hearing all those songs reminded me of growing up in the valley of the sun. Wanted this to come out for years. CD baby was awesome too.

  • Way, way overdue collection.
    author: Jerry Junkie

While living in Minnesota in 1975, my buddy slapped Riopelle's Take A Chance on the turntable, and I received straight shot of rocking blues and boogie right into my heart. I was immediately hooked on the music of Jerry Riopelle. I spent a better part of the next 30 years looking for his music in every city I'd visit - sometimes even buying 2 albums knowing one would get worn out. Finally, the dream of Jerry Junkies everywhere has come true - his best stuff on 4 amazing CD's. If you haven't had the pleasure, go ahead and "Take a Chance". You won't regret it.

  • A must for any true music lover, An Excellent Bargain
    author: Yoga Bob

When I heard Riopelle would finally be available on C.D. I was thrilled. I figured for the price it would be the usual collection of greatest hits Missing most of my favorite songs but still much better than the record with most of the tread gone from over playing, but when I got this C.D. I was Amazed to find every song, all of them, complete, Incredible. Thank you Jerry.!!!

Great sounds, great music, brings flashbacks of my past rock'n years in Phx and Flag. My wish to reviewers Tammie and Natalie is to - Get loaded, Like we used to do.......

Jerry Riopelle is a little known national treasure. This long overdue set of CD's follows his musical growth and progression from spare blues to the boogie, ballads, and get down rockers that set him apart. While there isn't a clinker in the bunch, discs 2 & 3 are especially rich and definitely contain some of his best work. An amazing collection that is a must have.

  • Beyound my wildest hopes! timeless, priceless

The Works is the seminal collection of Jerry Riopelle. The power and energy of these CD's only touch on the talent and wit that all of us who grew-up in Arizona had pleasure of LIVING with eagerly awaiting almost 30 concerts between 1975 and 1984. So curl up with this set and nearly 2600 of your closest friends, while Jerry and the Double Shuffle Band rock your socks off. Jerry's the one on a keyboard rotating on a revolving stage in the center... Yes the folks in section 3A are smoking. There is a smoking section here at Celebrity, and don't worry you can come party at the bar under the stage with all of us & Jerry after the show.

  • Outstanding! Just what the doctor ordered!

After losing my early Riopelle albums in a divorce, I didn't think I'd get to hear some of the songs again. Thanks Jerry! You're the Best!

  • A "must have" collection for all Riopelle fans.

I've been a fan of Jerry Riopelle since the early 80's when I used to go to the New Year's Eve concerts. I've been waiting forever to get his music on CD since my records are worn out as is the turntable. Thanks for bringing those memories back to life. I'll play this "Over and Over!"

This is the ultimate collection for any serious Jerry Riopelle fan. All the great songs from all the great albums. A long time in coming, but definately worth the wait! Some cuts from "In The Round" would have been nice for those of us who spent many New Years Eves at the Celebrity!

  • Great Collection
    author: Rick

I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and became very familiar with Jerry Riopelle music and his great annual New Year Eve concerts. Listen to "In The Round" for a great live performance. "The Works" is a must for anyone who has ever been a Jerry Riopelle fan. It really shows his growth from the early albums to the most recent. The music industry really missed out on a talented musician and performer by not promoting him as a national act. It's always been disappointing that his CD's are hard to find. To those who know him, "BUY IT". To those who don't, "TRY IT" and become a Riopelle fan.

This is an excellent collection and expansive demonstration of Jerry's talent. The man knows how to set a mood and skillfully writes and plays through multiple facets of the musical landscape. ALWAYS a rockin' live show followed closely by those in the know. A true original talent. Get some.

  • Incredible!
    author: n8vaz

This is an outstanding addition to any genuine music lover's library. The depth and breadth of this cd's lyrics and music is "grab you by the gut and make love to your heart" outstanding. Why this music never got beyond the pale imitation of Kenny Loggins' take of "Easy Driver" is incomprehensible. Forget the "lite" version, take this full on real thing! Thank you cdBaby for offering this up!

  • Fabulous music by an amazing songwriter!
    author: BabyRose

Every Riopelle fan will love this collection and those new to his music will see what they were missing all these years. I've been playing it every day....the ballads soothe and the rocking tunes ignite. Definitely worth having!

I now can listen to Riopelle on my Ipod on the beach in Mexico. This 4 disk set is truly awesome! My wife and I have listened to it cover to cover and love the original tracks and the clarity

  • OUTSTANDING, BRILLIANT, OVERDUE, MUST HAVE ON DESERT ISLAND
    author: bbnaz

These four disks are the soundtrack of my emergence as an adult. Lucky enough to have seen and heard these songs played live many, many times, I have been waiting for the opportunity to buy them in digital form. No more scouring on line auctions for rare cd output. These are ones that I want (okay, I REALLY want EVERY song done, but that most likely won't happen) and I have not only purchased a "current" listening one, but a few back ups for the future (as long as technology doesn't change too much but hey I still have vinyl/turntable). This music will have you wondering how in the hell some of the "talent" that is out there today make millions when such a treasure as this was left to a lucky few. Go and spread the gospel....RIOPELLE LIVES! A huge thank you to son Paul Riopelle for putting this together!

  • The Works Rocks!
    author: Matt Marsh

This CD has it all! Riopelle fans will not be disapointed...All tracks digitally re-mastered...Better than the original albums...Take a step back in time and ENJOY...
