Melbourne singer songwriter Rich Webb delivers album number three. Rolling Stone likens it to Nick Cave, Dylan, Kim Salmon, and Matthew Sweet
Overboard is thumping wired alternative rock one minute, the tenderest urban ballad the next. It's an alarmingly inspired concoction, held together by Webb's voice that howls and shimmies like a dust storm from the Mallee desert.
The album has scored sensational reviews, is available in Australia from JB Hi-Fi record stores and the major independents, from select stores in Europe and by download from iTunes. And of course from here! The album has just been licensed in Korea.
Lead track Don't Feel So Sad is the first single and has been released in Australia and also Holland and Belgium (through Pitar/Holland Promotions). A video for the track was shot at the start of the year by Tom Harris in the groovy 50s styling Lido Ballroom in Melbourne and is regularly showing on Australia's national music show Rage.
Rich has been supporting the release with many local shows and attended the Popkomm music festival in Berlin in September, combining it with full band tour of the UK in October. The Holland single will be backed by European/UK dates in April/May.
The album was recorded at Joe Camilleri's Woodstock studios in Melbourne with bassist/co-producer James McHugh (SEK, Stiff Kittens), drummers Ivan Khatchoyan (Oscillate, True Live) and David Eugene Webb (Burn, Moth), lead guitarist Dan Luscombe (Paul Kelly, Black-Eyed Susans), and pedal steel giant Ed Bates (The Sports). Mixing was by ARIA winner Paul McKercher at Sing Sing in Melbourne.
Overboard is Rich's third album and builds on The Girl Who Laughed Too Much (1997) (mixed by Tony Cohen) and Bring On The Dancing Girls (2001). Prior to this, Rich was the singer/guitarist with Melbourne fuzz pop three piece The Stiff Kittens, touring the US and UK, including shows at New York's CBGBs and Bat Cave, London's Forum and Glasgow's Barrowlands.
Here's what's been said about Overboard:
* Howlingly good, dark hued Aussie popmeister. London Evening Standard
* It's a gem of a record. Don't Feel So Sad is a hit in the making with a chorus to die for. DB Magazine
* Classy package from olde M-Town. Rolling Stone
* Tracks like 'Move on Over' and 'Burn in Hell' demonstrate Rich Webb's commanding presence... his husky dry voice resonating amongst a sea of howling guitars and solid bass lines. Rough Trade
* If you're into darker alternative rock that has a depth and sophistication to it, look no further. Australian Music Community
* A mix of thumping alterno rock and tender urban balladry. Time Out, London
* A brooding train ride which rolls with glowing guitar, riveting rhythms and lingering bass. Webb teases the subconscious with a sneaking sinister style. Forte
* He's been compared to Cave and Dylan but Webb's got his own line in dark pop. Music Australia Guide
* Like a Tarantino film soundtrack! A guy after a show at The Empress, Melbourne
