notes

Recording, so far, has been a long, long hermitage. Surrounding myself with pianos, organs, drumsets, trumpets, flutes, recorders, turntables, tin whistles, and the occasional vibraphone, thermin and electric keyboard lent by friends, I engulfed to make these recordings in the (and I want to say cold) but, surprisingly, warm winter of 06. In an empty house, decorated with photographs of friends and family, the bulk of these recordings were made. Lesson learned, having real warm beings with me (besides my cat) would be ideal for the next recording process so bring an instrument and meet me then.

- A Short Biography -

In Peter Graves' voice.... What started as a solo recording project has turned into an engulfing year of church organs, thermins, vibraphones and grinches. After deciding to make a solo record while working with some other bands (the Hylozoists, femBots, & Cuff the Duke), it became clear that cueing up my debut EP to Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas was not going to be simple.

My debut recording, Personal Publication, has been created after multiple, multiple, multiple viewings of the Dr. Seuss classic, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" (1966). The record was written to the film and was written both tonally and lyrically with the Grinch in mind.

- Some of My Many Influences -

Brian Wilson and his Boys from the Beach (he will one day overcome his life aquatic fear), Donovan (where your love like anything), The Beat Less Crickets Spin-off Band (actually, Ringo laid down some great beats and so did McCartney), Buddy (and also the Buddy whose Chubby and Big)... I could probably go on for a while (I'm only on the B's still). Film Soundtracks (anything Hitchcock, The Mission, 2001, anything Coppola [Not the big FF but Sophia or Roman]), all things introduced by older siblings' (including the expression "all things"), people like Lindsay D who live and breathe music and who share their musical database knowledge so passionately; they are the reason bands become bands and, the reason we're all alive, Air (both the band and "O two").

  • Such a wonderful album!
    author: Paul

It's difficult to fully appreciate in a short message how well crafted and executed this album is. With every listen, a new sound is discovered somewhere within the richness of the music . I can't wait to hear more of his stuff, and I'll be the first in line to see him next time he's in Ottawa (or next time I'm in Halifax). Thanks Rich!
