notes
Dr. Bailey has written four books on the Parables of Jesus (cf. Shenango.org/bailey.htm) They are all dedicated to interpreting the parables of Jesus from a Middle Eastern cultural perspective.
These 15 lectures present some of that material in DVD format for class use in home Bible studies or in Sunday School adult education classes. They are geared to the average thinking lay person and no technical background is necessary to understanding them.
Many new aspects of the parables appear when they are placed in a Middle Eastern cultural context. In the Middle East no young man will ever request his inheritance while his father is in good health because to do so means that the boy wants his father dead. The parable of the Prodigal Son begins with such a request and the entire parable takes a new direction when the reader is aware of this reality. Jesus does not tell a story about a good Jew who, in Samaria, turns aside to help a wounded Samaritan. In the Middle East the one who turns aside to help a rounded man will be accused of causing the accident. These cultural realities provide the cultural setting within which the richness of Jesus’ parables can be found. These studies attempt to open new doors to a richer understanding of the parables.
