Chris Rel
Chris Rel (pronounced “real”) was born in The Bronx and raised in Spring Valley, NY. He began rapping at the age of 12 under the influence of De la Soul, Ras Kass and The Roots. His style was unique from the beginning. Battling and performing with the other kids in his neighborhood, Chris set himself apart from the others with his conscious rhymes.
Rapping throughout his high school days, Chris took his talent to the next level while attending Stony Brook University. He and fellow classmate “Omni-Blaize” formed the group Kenek. The duo recorded and performed together, but never released a project. The two eventually parted ways and Chris went on to record his solo debut “Follow Me.” Drawing influences from the life he had lived and the emotions he’d longed to express on the mic. During the recording of “Follow Me,” Chris traveled abroad to perform his new material at venues such as the Redstar in London, England and also recorded several tracks in Sweden.
Arriving back in the US in early 2004 with “Follow Me” soon-to-be released, Chris hit the stage. In New York he performed at Speed, Pyramid and Groove to name a few. Chris Rel was also a featured performer in The Next Big Hit showcase for several weeks.
Now it’s 2007 and Chris has been writing for the past two years. He’s been back to Sweden to record and performed at the Swedish Music Festival in Malmo. Upon his return to New York, he was chosen by the Lincoln Jazz Center to lead hip-hop workshops between gigs in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Nepal.
With his second album, “Voice of Truth” due out in spring 2007, Chris says he hopes, “that people recognize the talent” his album has. “I’m just trying to get to the truth in hip-hop again, the essence of the music. I think people are lost in façade of things and hopefully this album will bring it back to the center.”
