The Refugee All Stars album 'Living Like a Refugee' is the realization of a lifelong dream for this inspiring band of Sierra Leonean musicians who lived for nearly a decade in refugee camps in West Africa. A brutal civil war (1991-2002) forced them from their homes in Sierra Leone. Many of their family and friends were murdered in the violence, leaving them with physical and emotional scars that may never heal. Despite the unimaginable horrors of civil war, they were saved through their music. Through music, The Refugee All Stars have found refuge, purpose and a source of power by giving a voice to the experiences of so many struggling to survive. Each song on 'Living Like a Refugee' is an original composition written during their years in exile in the refugee camps. The powerful lyrics speak to the suffering and injustice they have seen but also reverberate with hopeful optimistic rhythms.
The Refugee All Stars are the subject of a soon-to-be released documentary film that chronicles the band over three years, from refugee camps in Guinea back to war-ravaged Sierra Leone. THE REFUGEE ALL STARS film reveals unique and inspiring personal stories of survival and rebirth through the universal language of music. As violent conflicts multiply around the globe the worldwide refugee crisis deepens. The story of The Refugee All Stars puts a human face, gives names and real experience to the innocent survivors of war whose brutal realities are often dismissed by mainstream media sound bytes. Outstanding. Inspirational. Gifted musicians. For those who love good music a
author: RSTThis cd is outstanding. These are gifted musicians who have produced a first rate cd. All those who love good music and who care about social justice will love this cd. The musicians' triumph over adversity is inspirational. The music and lyrics evoke memories of my experience teaching in Sierra Leone and the indomitable spirit of the Sierra Leonean people.
Absolute Stunner!
author: Joan HuntWhat an incredible find! When I first came across Living Like A Refugee, I was taken aback by the pure heart and wisdom of each song. The beautiful melodies, the soulfulness, the clarity - all are outstanding in and of themselves, and completely breathtaking as a whole. I continue to be overwhelmed by emotion when confronted by the depth of this collection of songs and have yet to find anyone who hasn't been equally moved when I play this CD for them.
Up there with Buena Vista as a musical national ID.
author: J. BelshamA hot weather and cold beer album that puts one in mind of holidays on the beach. The lyrics however, tell the sadder side of the story of Sierra Leone and should prompt the listener to read a book and look at a map. Can't wait to see the film.
Great CD, even for those who don't like reagge
author: Paul KronstThis is a wonderful CD. I want to dance to it. I usually am not a reagge fan, but I enjoy listening to this CD over and over again.
A moving portrait of refugee life, our people without place. inspirational.
author: Jessica Camara"Living Like a Refugee is not easy." is an awesome freshman effort from experienced artists of Sierra Leone. The song "Soda Soap" which has a catchy tune that will get you head bopping will also give you pause to reflect. The refugee's began to depend on the sweet comforting smell of 'baking' Soda Soap when life became tough for them. the scent brought them back home to a peaceful Sierra Leone. Soda Soap topped charts in Sierra Leone in 2005. You will not be dissappointed!

So impressed with the CD!
author: LaurenI just saw your movie at The Human Rights Film Festival and was disappointed that you were unable to get to NY for the opening night. However, the music from the film/soundtrack just blew me away. I was brought to tears (and laughter)during many of the tracks and can't wait to see you preform when you finally make it to the states.
Fantastic- and I love the cover art
author: ClaireThis CD is great, I especially like the first CD- It seems less produced and more like I am there with them! I loved the cover art and the booklet inside also. What a powerful story...
Live and on CD, RAS rule
author: stevecongaLike many others, heard snippets of their music on NPR, and was inspired by their story. I have been a big reggae and african music fan for almost 20 years, and this is definitely the best of both worlds. After checking out the RAS website, followed the link to CDBABY and bought the CD. Easy ordering, cheap shipping and the CD was waiting for me when I got back from vacation. I've playing the heck out of the CD for six weeks, when I saw that the RAS were touring - and would be in my area at the Beachcomber in Wellfleet MA...! Talk about lucky...! I made sure to get tickets and be there - the 'Comber is a small room with a reputation for great sound, thanks to their awesome sound man, Chris Blood. Well, went to the show last Friday, and the All Stars absolutely ripped it. I mean, they threw it down with AUTHORITY like i haven't seen in a long while. Best African show I've seen since I was lucky enough to catch the Bhundu Boys. The RAS had the entire crowd dancing ecstatically... The show was structured much like the CD, except they ripped the electric first. Then they came out and did 20-30 minutes acoustic 'encore' set that was every bit as hot as the fully-wired version. Got to shake all their hands, thank them, and wish them welcome to America and good luck...
amazing
author: Michelle IbarraAmazing that such happy music can come from such deplorable situations. The human spirit is alive in Africa...even through all of this.
Infectious rythyms and upbeat messages, great combination
author: Virginia DugasMy husband and I first heard snipets of the CD and its music on an NPR broadcast. We were moved by the story and the music is a testament to survival and triumph. Infectious rythyms, reggae and ska influences get your booty movin'
Moving; touching; groovy; exceptional
author: Doug HellerGreat double cd; especially cd 1; recorded in refugee camp. See the movie; see the people who make this music, buy this cd; and hopefully the world will be a bit more just and you will have some good grooves.
A great batch of catchy tunes sure to cheer anyone up
author: Alex BalesThis album comprises some great, catchy songs. The first disc is raw uncut RAS. You can hear the toil and turmoil that these men and women have gone through in their instruments and their voices. I love it. The second disc has many of the same songs, but recorded in a studio, with some electric effects and drum kit. Even the "cleaned up" versions are superb. Some of these songs will be stuck in your head for days!
REFRESHING REFUGEES
author: brianIf you can not totally enjoy and dance to this album you really should question your taste in music. I am so thankful i bought this. And CDBABY is a fantastic online seller. Thank you for the experiences!!!!
Spirit seems to speak through this music. This is a classic!
author: BethThis is a classic! And, a great gift for anyone intested in Reggae, human rights, diversity, culture and of course - MUSIC~! The first CD of the set is now my all-time favorite. It's as if I am listening to Spirit through these musicians. Thank you!
A Great Choice!!

magical!
author: ChrisHaving worked in Sierra Leone during part of the war, my ears perked up when I heard the story about this band! Their music is just wonderful...so soulful and truthful. And you can't beat the fact that 100 percent of the money goes to them...
Excellent purchase
This cd is great---love to listen to it all the time!
Bittersweet-lets you dance through the tears and trials
author: Judah DwyerMajor contribution. Wonderful idea to record the spirit still strong in the camps with the most simple of accompaniment, then many of the same songs and more within the studio, full compliment. Made me, again, to shout out loud to stop the madness! and just let folks live to love, grow, chop, dance and sing. You will all live long!
Singing life's ups and downs
author: Peter PepperGotta give these folks a huge hug for keeping alive the spirit of singing life out loud.
Brilliant! Worth every penney!
author: JanetHeard this group on NPR and was blown away....the CD is fabulous. I am playing it all the time. These guys play from the heart and you can tell.
Fun, fun, fun!
author: StacyWhat better bang for your buck can you get than to give to a great cause while receiving a CD in return? And not just any CD but one with a great message of reality and hope that's fun, fun, fun to move to!
Just amazing!
author: MarianWonderful CD, full of hope but not shirking on the reality of the refugee life. Reminds me of Max Romeo in the quality of the music and the lyrics.

Excellent work
author: Cicada EntEveryone who reviewed this album dropped 5 stars, I am no different. This album is hot and there are so many songs, all of them are top notch. Hazey Say So!
Excellent
author: DebraSince I've received this CD, I listen to it everyday. It is wonderful and fun, while also being thought provoking. If you have a chance to see this band in concert, you must go. It will change your life.
Ideal music
author: FaithThese two CDs are excellent, laid-back music. I usually don't listen to much music, but I listened to both albums. The band's story is very touching, and from what I have heard, the band is full of very kind people.
Report from France
author: PatsyI'm prejudiced = it's in the family. However, I have given the CD to friends here in France who rave about it - and most of them don't understand a word of the songs!! They, all ages, all types, love the story behind it - but mostly they love the music.
After listening to both CD's it's a must have!
author: BevI just listened to both CD's - acoustic and more reggie-filled version. Both were inspired musical creations, lending both a solid voice to the cause and a musical melody of substance and beauty. "It's infectious" another reviewer said - and that's spot on! Bravo!
Fantastic rootsy music
author: YakpaoloI have lived in Guinea working with Sierra Leonian Refugees, and found this music to bring me back to the bush. The authenticity and soul in this CD is well represented by their music.
Fantastic!
author: A happy listenerWonderful and fantastic. Buy this CD. Support a great cause. You won't stop listening to the music - it's infectious.
unbelievable
author: Mike k.This music is incredible. If you like reggae at all this is a heart stirring classic.
God bless you for this artwork.
author: Sonia, Los AngelesThis is a great CD if you're looking to diversify your listening. I am preparing to move to West Africa, so a friend brought this to my attention. I mention that because the region in which this CD was birthed is so significant for context. The lyrics are real and they stab at your heart. The music is upbeat and optimistic.
Awesome music!
author: SylviaAfter hearing RAS on NPR, I had to order the CD. Absolutely love the music and lyrics. Sends a powerful message about the plight of the refugees and their strengh in adversity. May their music be heard all around the world.
A Rare Gem
author: EileenThis CD is truly inspirational and brought tears to my eyes with the raw emotion it evokes. You can't help but listen to it over and over again - and it will have you dancing and singing along to it -one of the best compilations I have ever heard with such a powerful message that needs to be shared.
Great Africa Reggae with a message
author: Patrick KeyesI heard this CD on NPR and I had to get. It is great music and has a great beat. It is also very nice because it has a good message. The rights of refugees and there desire for a better life.
If it had grooves I'd have already worn them off
author: TomI've been collecting reggae, highlife and palmwine music from Africa for about 15 years and this is overall probably in the top 5 albums I've ever heard. I want to hear more from these folks!
truly a joy. Thanks CDBaby!!
author: LindaTruly a joy. I try to listen to it every day. Thanks, CDBaby!!
Everything the other reviews listed say, plus!
author: Bruce RhineLove the naturalness of the music. These guys should go to the top... if the music moguls let them. Very uplifting. I'm lucky it's not vinyl, it would be worn out.
If you like reggae, you will LOVE this.
author: Sam StierThis is one of the great reggae albums of all time - great music and a very generous CD (2 disks basically for the price of one), but it is more than that, because it is written and played by people who really have something to sing about, and you can tell. I particularly like how the first CD is the music as it was played by the artists before they had access to a studio, which is very cool for musicians and anyone interested in music production. If you like reggae, I couldn't recommend this CD more - you will love it!!!
So inspirational and energizing!
author: WendyGreat chance to support some wonderful work being done in an area rife with sadness and challenges. The music really lifts your spirit and helps you feel like you are doing something good for others who struggle in the world.
Inspirational, fun, gives hope and it rocks!!
author: Frank M.I've read the other reviews and I concur wholeheartedly. Inspirational, showing the healing power of music and the strength of the human condition. Reggae and African rythms with joy and energy. Makes ya want to dance, and if you buy it you support the artists. A win/win situation.
warm, lively, wonderful.
author: karen millerI love to listen this CD, full of questions, truth, and love, not to mention heart-raising music.
terrific
author: DeborahThis is a terrific CD. The music is singable, danceable and wonderful to listen to. Astonishingly upbeat considering what the singers have been through. I would only request a lyrics sheet included so that I can sing along with every word.
excellent
author: kawikaexcellent cds, very inspiring and proof that hope can come from very dark times.
Happy Happy Joy Joy
author: pamelaOkay. What a terrific website. Great service. Great communication. Good Humor. Professional. Thank you. I'll use you again sometime!
Pure, Raw reggae. A MIST have!
author: MikeThis is pre-UB40 reggae; not over-produced. A glorious, delicious expression by people who obviously love their music--and they show it! If you're a Marley fan, this is a CD you MUST have in your library. The only thing I would change is that they have included everything they've written; it would be a better album if it were 70-75 minutes, rather the album length of more than 2 hours.
- author: Emery
I first heard the music during an interview with some of the group members on PBS. I immediately ordered the CD. The story is amazing and the music is fantastic!!!
3 Cheers for Joy
author: AudreyProof that joy can exist and that music is integral to our collective humanity. And it makes me feel warm in the snow.
Awesome, inspiring music
author: Lisa BTwo great CDs, start to finish, by true musicians whose art offers hope and healing power - awesome stuff.
roots
author: Joe KlemAs real as it gets; reminds me so much of hearing, for the 1st time, Bob Marley in the 70's. Original, unique; so much so, you'll just play the discs again & again.
Love It!
author: Judy MGreat lyrics and music...My husband who is very serious about his music also loves it. Pass it on to any music lover.
I love it!
author: Nicole MI can't help but move when I put this music on. I listen to the CDs over and over and over. I first heard music from this CD during an interview with some of the group members on PBS. I immediately and impulsively bought it, and am so glad I did. The stories, the music, the feelings are profound.
You MUST buy this CD for yourself, and for them!
author: Jerome NelsonThis album is terrific, and it is even better when you consider the story that is behind it. Great two disc deal and there are some great live recordings in refugee camps
- author: Stan B.
Haven't bought an album/tape/CD in 20 yrs... There's not a bad tune here! Incredible!!
a powerful, joyous collection of music
author: CorneliaI really enjoyed the CD. The strength of these remarkable people comes through on their joyous songs. Hope they can continue to make CDs.
Smoothe......
author: Joe SinsWhat a great record! Words do not do this album justice. Listen to it, track by track and you will be lost in its spell.
Wonderful compass always pointing at life's lessons
author: jon farrarIt would be very difficult to listen to this excellent CD and not be humbled by the meaning of adversity and what truly inspired people do to overcome it, learn from its lessons, and apply those lessons with the belief that they are doing their part to make the world a better place.
Great African Reggae and freedom music
author: Evan T.Everything about this cd is amazing. The history of the band, the instruments, singing, lyrics, everything. Those who are expecting a polished reggae album may be dissapointed, but in these songs i have found a fountain of awsome reggae dance party music.
Joyous music from the depths of despair. BEST CD OF 2005!
author: Jeff BottgerFrom the depths of despair has come this joyous double CD. It contains an irresistable, glorious mixture of reggae and African rhythms, played with tight precision by these superb musicians. BEST CD OF 2005!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great, authentic, uplifting music from true-blue refugees
author: Gary CooperI just got my copy of Living Like a Refugee, and I can't stop listening. These Sierra Leoneans spent their time in refugee camps honing their music to revelatory splendor. I've worked for years with refugees from many countries, and I've never seen or heard a truer or more inspiring representation of their experiences. All that, with an irresistible dance beat.
A genuine and beautiful expression of "livin life as a refugee".
author: LucyA genuine and beautiful expression of "livin life as a refugee". The voices, the instruments, the interaction between the musicians all made the life of the Refugee All Stars come alive to me.
