notes

First full-length CD: Never Been to Vegas (2006)
In July 2006, Red Molly’s first full-length CD, Never Been to Vegas (2006), was released. Recorded on a December evening before a studio audience of fans and friends, Never Been to Vegas is a collection of fourteen carefully-chosen songs that span more than a century of great American songwriting. Never Been to Vegas quickly climbed into the Top 30 on the Radio & Records Americana chart, a rare accomplishment for an independent album. And listeners of WUMB radio Boston voted the CD one of the Top 10 CDs of 2006.

On a July evening in 2004, at their campsite at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner and Carolann Solebello harmonized for the very first time. As they sang their campmates off to sleep, they knew they had stumbled into something extraordinary. Audiences seem to agree. Since that summer night, Red Molly has garnered a devoted regional fan base, and has begun laying the groundwork for national touring. These ladies have a lot of fun on stage, and it’s contagious. Red Molly consistently brings concert-goers to their feet with stunning three-part harmonies, crisp musicianship, and a warm, engaging stage presence.

The magic of Red Molly stems partly from the richness and diversity of each member’s “pre-Molly” experiences. Laurie (vocals, guitar, banjo) left a career in psychology to pursue her love of singing. She worked for several years as a backup singer, and also released two solo albums, These Old Clothes (1999) and The Things I Choose To Do (2004). Abbie (vocals, Dobro, guitar) has a background in jazz, bluegrass, classical and a cappella music. She released two solo albums, My Craziest Dream (2004), a collection of swing standards featuring her father Herb Gardner on piano, and Honey on My Grave (2006), a collection of acoustic originals. In May 2008, she released a duo album, Bad Nights/Better Days, with Anthony da Costa. Carolann (vocals, guitar, bass, mandolin) spent several years as a professional theatre actor before releasing her solo album, Just Across the Water (2000). She went on to release two albums with power folk quartet CC Railroad, Smile Whatever (2001) and Black Horse Motel (2004).

ALSO, CHECK OUT:

4-song Debut: Red Molly (2005)
Red Molly's very first recording, made just a few months after the formation of the band, features the signature Red Molly sound: three voices in harmony, uncluttered arrangements, and timeless songs.

First full-length studio album: Love and Other Tragedies (2008)
Produced by Ben Wisch, Love and Other Tragedies finds the women of Red Molly adding a little spice to their winning recipe. The new album features a fuller, more “polished” sound than their previous releases, due in part to the contributions of guest artists Mike Weatherly (upright bass), Duke Levine (mandola, lap steel), and Jake Armerding (fiddle). In addition, the ladies incorporated more original songs into the mix this time. Songs written by Laurie, Abbie, and Carolann mingle admirably with songs by well-known contemporary writers Gillian Welch and Susan Werner, up-and-coming artists Amy Speace and George Wirth, traditional American gospel tunes, and standards from the bluegrass and jazz worlds.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT RED MOLLY:

"Everything Red Molly sings is delivered with tick-tight arrangements, crystalline vocals, and caramel harmonies. But what is most striking is the ardor they bring to everything they do, whether snuggling into the sweet parochialism of an old spiritual, or the gritty pathos of a Gillian Welch tune. They come on less like stars strutting for their minions than pals sharing their favorite songs. In the friendly world of the coffeehouse, that remains a starmaking quality."
-Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

"To say we were pleasantly surprised would be a gross understatement. They rock! Their musicianship is flawless. And their voices ... their harmonies sound like they've been singing together for years. Their energy is intoxicating. Their show was our first ever sell-out. For weeks afterward, people were asking, 'Are you getting Red Molly back for next season?' YES!"
-Rick Widdekind, Director, Second Saturday Concert Series (Frederick, MD)

"Red Molly came and made us all so happy. My only regret was that they only had one set; I could have listened to them all night! What they do is so NEEDED: keeping the old music alive, but making it refreshing, new, and unique."
-Lisa Wenzel, Director, Circle Of Friends Coffeehouse (Pleasantville, NY)

"They are just great. I don't think I have ever had as many requests to get someone back as I did for them. Great individual voices that sound wonderful together. See them if you can."
-Jake Jacobson, Booker, Circle of Friends Coffeehouse (Franklin, MA)

"Red Molly breathes new life into classic and contemporary Americana. A performance like theirs is the reason why I'm so fortunate to be doing this kind of radio."
-Jerry Treacy, Host, "Crash On The Levee", WFDU FM (Teaneck, NJ)

"Red Molly is a powerhouse NY trio that pulls out all the stops for their energizing stage performances. Laurie's clear, sensual voice shines through. Carolann's connection to the beat allows the band to run. Abbie wields the velvet hammer in the form of her Dobro. Red Molly's connection to the audience is intimate and strong."
-J. Spica, Host, "Thin Air", WVKR FM (Poughkeepsie, NY)

"The only thing that might be better than their harmonies and their musicianship is their stage presence. Tough call - it is all so good."
-Bill Hahn, Host, "Traditions", WFDU FM (Teaneck, NJ)

"These chicks create a sound straight out of their living room, with enough polish for a concert hall. Their voices transcend all. "
-Robert Price, Entertainment Editor, The New Jersey Herald (Newton, NJ)

"With gorgeous harmonies on original work and tasteful covers, plus slide guitar and multi-instrumental versatility, Red Molly brings a breath of fresh air into the singer/songwriter world. Here's hoping we'll be hearing from these three women for a long time."
-Richard Cuccaro, Publisher, Acoustic Live in NYC (New York, NY)

"A cross between the Dixie Chicks and 'O Brother, Where Art Thou'.”
-Frederick News-Post (Frederick, MD)

"Red Molly is one of the finest female groups I have heard in a long while. Their artistry will captivate you. If you want to be mesmerized by shimmering harmonies, I urge you catch one of their shows."
-Jerry Pashin, Writer, Upstage Magazine (Spring Lake, NJ)

“Red Molly plays high-energy, satisfying string band music with a hint of pop and a dash of country, and blends their voices in soul-pleasing three-part harmony.”
-Liz Milner, Writer, www.greenmanreview.com

“Their four-song EP makes me love country music. If you love music made by tremendously talented musicians then you owe it to yourself to check out Red Molly. I can’t say enough good things and can’t wait to hear more.”
-Mark Fisher, Writer, www.coffeehousetour.com

"Red Molly has taste, talent, and voices to die for. They make music the way it should be made: raw, powerful, and beautiful. With this band, you hear and feel the soul inside the songs. It's music to make the spirit soar."
-Michael Scott Cain, Author, "Midnight Train"

  • Pretty good album
    author: Steve Nathanson

We caught Red Molly at a folk festival in Huntington, New York last summer and really loved them. This live album, recorded around that time, was faithful to the set we heard. My only regret is that the album did not include some of the studio tracks on their original mini-album (which I also own). Great voices, musicianship and chemistry. This is not your sister's Dixie Chicks!!

  • Fantastic! Great harmonies
    author: Nita

How can you not enjoy 3 beautiful voices? I saw them live at Clearwater '07, and was in love with their music!

  • These musicians are off to a great start!

This cd has great song selections both covers and originals, the singing and harmonies are exquisite, and I'm especially partial to the dobro playing which provides a great accent to the songs and superb solos. These girls are going to go far!

  • These ladies put on a really good show!
    author: Brook from Pasadena

A little bit folk and little bit country. The lead singer reminds me a little of EmmyLou Harris. The harmony is really good and the songs are very thought provoking.

  • I heard ..I ordered..They conquered!!
    author: Susan from NJ

Never been to Vegas is a great CD and so stunning in it's engineering,it hardly sounds like a live performance except for the hearty applause after each song.I am anxious to share it with friends and add to the Red Molly followers. A must for any blue grass collection.

  • Perfect harmonies, great instrumental work and well-chosen tunes
    author: Ginger Zinkowski

I first heard this group on WUMB when they were selected as the best new artist of 2006. I had to have the CD ASAP, and it arrived very shortly after I placed my order here. Not a thing to be disappointed about. I don't know of any other group doing this kind of music at this time: great vocal harmonies and lovely country-style playing. The three voices mix beautifully and are backed up by excellent instrumental work on fiddle, banjo and mandolin, as well as the expected guitar. They have selected a mix of music that suits their vocal stylings and even though some of the songs are new and some are traditional, the album sounds seamless. I can't wait to see these ladies live!

  • A diamond in the rough
    author: LennyO

I heard a tune from "Red Molly" on the Midnight Special radio program and just had to learn more. After searching the most popular CD web sites to no avail, I e-mailed the host, Rich Warren, and he sent me your web site. Red Molly is a refreshing, old time, small town feel that I really enjoy. After working all day, it's like taking a walk in the woods with my dogs on a cool crisp morning and finding a secret place. Although I do not live out east I hope to see Red molly someday. LennyO

  • A live album as good as a studio album
author: Richard Urmston, Black Potatoe Music Fest

I generally prefer studio albums to live; maybe it's the perfectionist in me, but there it is. I heard--and saw--Red Molly at a music festival this summer, and was very impressed by two things: this is a group that can produce polished, high-quality live versions of their repertoire and, just as important, this is a group of three talented individuals with three distinct personalities, personalities that come across immediately. Think about it: I challenge you to name any two of the Dave Clark Five or the Supremes; but you'll never hear anyone say, "John, Paul, and..um, wait, wait, I know this, um..." So, to sum up, I'm not saying Red Molly is the next Beatles, but they are on tour in the here and now, so go and see them while you can.

  • We LOVE it!
author: Lois and Greg Syrek (Colby Court Concerts)

We love this CD. We look forward to even more from Red Molly - this CD has the prime spot in the CD player in the car, and on my I-pod.

  • Got an itch for good ole fashioned music at it's best?
author: Red Molly: Never Been to Vegas

This CD will scratch your itch for the best eclectic blue grass folk music ever! How do 3 females come up with 4 part harmony? I heard this group on the radio and had to buy the CD. This is a must have.

  • absolutely wonderful!
    author: Mike

I've only had the opportunity to hear RM live twice, so i was definately anxious for a full-length CD. I was not disappointed by any stretch of the imagination. The harmonies are beautiful, and the playing flawless. I can only dream about what their follow-up will be like (sorry, getting greedy!). It's very refreshing that people still put time and energy into learning, writing, and playing songs that aren't overdubbed, with tons of effects. When you're good, you don't need much, and RM proves that time and again.

  • Great youg group
    author: Bob

Red Molly is a great young group. Have heard them in person and the CD reflects their quality.

  • Hi from Madison, WI heard your new CD...loved it, bought it,

Never been to Vegas played on WORT in Madison, WI mid August, 2006. I loved it and bought it that day. Please find your way to the mid-West.

  • Molly holy marvellous
    author: Pieter from Holland

knowing the girls from previous solo activities i was surprised to learn they made an album together. Three times one adds to more than 3 in this case. Great Marvellous, the record is hard to remove from the player, though i have more than 10.000 records i my collection i think this one makes it to the top drawer. Great girls i looking forward to more good music.

  • Great C.D. Fabulous vocal harmonies

Sensasional picking and great vocal hamonies from three great singers

  • Definitely a keeper!

A wonderful CD! Stellar muscianship, impeccable harmonies abound, combined with a great selection of songs. Acoustic music at its best. Highly recommended!

  • Great music, both live and on CD
    author: Joe Treimel

It is difficult to find words to say how much I enjoyed seeing Red Molly live. It was a Died and Went to Heaven experience. The new CD, Never Been To Vegas is great and I've purchased several as gifts.

  • Love it!
    author: Ed Harrow

We heard Red Molly opening for Stan Rogers at Circle of Friends, in Franklin, MA. I shouldn't say this in print; we were disappointed when they left the stage for the featured artist. We've had the CD for about a week, it's not yet left the CD-player. Even some of the neighbors have heard it, LOL. You simply must add it to your collection. (Do I get my tip now?) ;-)

  • Loved the new CD
    author: Jan Holden

I first heard Red Molly in Hamilton NY at a music mix. I loved them and have since bought 3 of Laurie's CD's and the 4 song CD, plus this new one. I am never disappointed, if anything I am truly amazed. I love the banter in this live CD, and I can't wait for these incredibly talented women to put out more CD's! I have to fight my husband not to take my Red Molly CD's for his car!!

  • Red Molly -The Start of Something Big
    author: Bill King

Two years on the road playing up and down the east coast for any venue that will have them Red Molly (Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner and Carolann Solebello) have honed there sound into a pleasant mix of traditional folk, bluegrass and country. What I find so amazing about there first full length CD (Never Been to Vegas) is how remarkably clean the sound is giving one the impression that it must have done over weeks of editing, engineering and overdubs. Not the case this is live in the studio one take music. All of it right on. The selections are pulled from country music roots (Hank Cochran - SHE’S GOT YOU, Hank Williams - LONG GONE LONESOME BLUES) today’s contemporary writers (David Rawlings & Gillian Welch - CALEB MEYER, Ryan Adams - OH MY SWEET CAROLINE) and band member Abbie Gardner’s own SEVEN YEARS and OHIO) Now Ohio is a song with very infectious lyrics so much so that for 30 years now when I head the word Ohio the first thing to enter my mind was .“Tin Soldiers and Nixon Coming” the opening lines Neil Young penned Crosby Stills Nash and Young song dealing with the National Guard killing of 4 students on the campus of Kent State during the height of the Vietnam War Now when I head the Ohio the first thing in my mind is “I Gotta Go I Gotta Go’ the opening lines of Red Molly’s Ohio. That’s pretty impressive in my opinion. During there sets there is a lot of shuffling around of instruments and the girls take turns playing various combinations of Guitar, Dobro, Acoustic Bass, and Banjo. Go out and get this CD because someday soon you will be watching some musical award or other on TV and when the envelope is opened and the name “Red Molly” is announced you can sit in your favorite living room chair pump you fist in the air and just let out a “Way to Go Gals”

  • An eclectic mix of Americana
    author: Neal Wexler

I LOVE this CD. Red Molly are best experienced live, and this album is great at giving you the feel of what their live shows are like while also delivering studio quality production. The exchanges between Laurie, Abbie, and Carolann are fun and funny. It's exactly what they are like live (although I did miss Abbie's animal jokes she often tells live). The songs themselves are great; an eclectic mix of Americana. From upbeat songs about murder to slow songs about love, you'll never know what to expect from song to song. The only thing you'll know is that Red Molly will give their own unique voice to the songs, and will also make them 100% real. You'll feel the pain, experience the love, and long to move back to Ohio (even if you've never been there before). I can't say enough good things about this band or this album. If I can say one thing, it's that I expect this band to blow up BIG very soon. I dare you not to love them!

  • A masterful work from start to finish.
    author: Mic Rains

I was fortunate enough to engineer RED MOLLY'S first EP. I've worked with some great talent, but never have I found myself shaking my head in disbelief at what these women could do. I mixed this latest record, and in doing so listened to each song dozens of times. The testament of this masterpiece is that not only did I never tire of these lush, rich, flawless harmonies, but instead, found myself wanting more and more. The talent of these 3 women is completely inspiring.

  • Tempting treasure from this talented trio with traditional tastes - tasty tunes!
    author: Jim Colbert

Their first full-length CD, Vegas is a wonderful, solid and consistent mix of traditional-feeling material from these three talented multi-instrumentalists with gorgeous harmonies and tight arrangements. Highlights for me include a rolling version of Billy Ed Wheeler's Coal Tattoo, Abbie Garnder's infectious Ohio (just try to get it out of your head later!), the traditional Mary of the Wild Moor and possibly the definitive version of Gillian Welch's Caleb Myer. Recommended without reservation.
