Part art, part alchemy, the group's experimental songwriting style is both angular and eerie, accented by freeform space rock improvisations, intricate acoustics, dark atmospherics and chunky riffs.

Some reviews:

Philadelphia City Paper
July 2004

In the Nu-progressive rock underground, few bands are as respected and feared as Philadelphia's The Red Masque. Without irony or kitsch, the whirlwind that is Masque - on the new Feathers for Flesh (Big Balloon) -- stalks the darkness of Hammer Horror ambience and cursedly complex musicianship (think Gong meets Bauhaus) with only feedbacking noise, sound-collage clustering and the howl of vocalist Lynnette Shelley to light its way.

Recently The Red Masque released their newest CD called Feathers For Flesh. We were in talks back in mid September 2001 to do an album with this great band but due to various issues it never quite happened. Well, they have finally issued what I think is their best album to date. Dark prog with a generous sprinkle of experimental psych and some seriously great female vocals by Lynnette. This is an album that will you play non stop for 2 weeks straight. Highest recommendations for this album!

  • From the first track to the last I was suprised .The Red Masque is different.

From the first track to the last I was suprised .The Red Masque is different. Its hard to describe what style they play. They are more like musical quick change artists.Once you feel comortable with one style ,they change to another sound within a beat.Thats not easy. They pull it off seamlessly and I feel with a great deal of musical skill. This is one band that can be artistic and kick a.. at the same time.

    author: Brad Jeffreys

These guys bring back that spaceyl stuff that bands like early Softmachine, Floyd,Crimson,Vandergraff,Gong,Henrykow..ect. I miss that in alot of new stuff.Thanx Red Masque for not following the leader. I am very pleased this is now in my collection.

  • They have more sound twists than a pretzle...Great stuff!!!
    author: Marta Orens

Man have they grown. They are in my opinion one of the most creative bands in this style today. They have more sound twists than a pretzle. They create differently than any artists I know of. This CD may scare you at times but It will NEVER bore you. They are like an earthquake, quiet rumbles at first then all hell breaks loose. So Play it loud, and often, you will be well rewarded.

  • This band takes the listener on a journey they wont want to come back from.
    author: Webster Slaycon

This CD takes the listener on a journey they wont want to come back from. The different directions the band turns soundwise is remarkable. They capture at times the haunting moods of the Doors, the bombastic thunder of King Crimson, experimental sounds collages of Edgar Varesse...with a pinch of Celtic.Do not walk to purchase this CD RUN!!! you will be glad you did.
