With a combination of unorthodox rhythms, aggressive guitars and melodic vocals, the northeastern Pennsylvania quarter has pushed the envelope and redefined the boundaries of the hard rock genre. Formed in late 2005, RECOIL began when drummer JIM EARNEST and guitarist KENT REINFORD embarked on a new musical project. After an exhaustive search, they found musicians who fit the mold perfectly—bassist MARK SHEAMAN and vocalist DUSTIN DILLMAN—and the group immediately began sharpening their musical skills as a band.
The countless hours of writing and rewriting songs and honing their sound came to a resounding climax when RECOIL began recording their self-titled debut, full-length album in March 2007. Though arduous, the fruits of the recording process were extraordinary, with nine songs released in August 2007. Forging a balance between the simplicity and formulaic quality of modern hard rock, and the pretentious, often self-indulgent nature of progressive music, the album blends melody with syncopated rhythm, harmony with aggression. With the rhythmic onslaught of “The Zealot”—a cautionary tale on the perils of blind faith, the acerbic exploration of addiction in “Tourniquet,” and the disquieting journey of “Ever Still, Ever Forward.,” the songs navigate through a range of emotions, while meandering through unconventional rhythm and structure, but not without maintaining a strong and catchy melodic presence.
As a live act, RECOIL combines original material with popular cover songs across multiple musical genres, molding the entire mix into one high-energy event that has captivated audiences from northeastern Pennsylvania to the Philadelphia area, and beyond. Ever the perfectionists, RECOIL continues to write and record original material, while preserving their ever-growing fan base with live shows. RECOIL is not only meant to be heard, RECOIL is meant to be seen, to be experienced firsthand.
