notes
“The Sun and Sea” is about life and death, hope and loss, faith, love, and war. It’s about the pitch black of the night sky and its tiny points of light. The story of a tiny seed that dies to become a tall, lovely oak. The story of a drowning man, of war-torn brothers, of Lazarus rising to his sisters’ arms. The story of Eden’s serpent being tempted to love.
Rebels & Scientists are storytellers, dreamcatchers, tapestry weavers. Their debut album is equally epic and intimate, a sleeping giant that rises and yawns and rages and thunders and dreams again. Guitars are darkest waves at the rocks, dip like calling birds, rise like whalesong, cellos and bass are weighted clouds, fistfuls of earth, a panther slung over a low limb, drums are a cavalry’s footfall, rain in torrents, and a voice that pours through it all like a rich, hot brew from a copper kettle, a red sun tossed to a black sea. A rock record? Yes. But a rock overturned to reveal the teeming life beneath.
