Reba Hasko grew up in rural, upstate New York out of a fertile, creative ground of music-loving parents, colorful twin brothers, a close-knit, eccentric neighborhood, and a very special grandmother. At an early age she was lulled by her grandmother's lustrous voice, crooning favorite standards, show tunes and Patsy Cline songs. From this grandmother, she inherited her devotion to singing and the generous gift of a piano. At nine years old and armed with this combination, Reba immediately began exhibiting the improvisational instinct that would create the radiant, award-winning music she is known for today.
With dreams of becoming a song writer, her acceptance after high school into the Crane School of Music in upstate New York seemed the ideal next step. Once there, however, she was quickly claimed by the School's opera director and thrust into the drama and rigors of that discipline. By this detour, she discovered a passion for atonal music and mixed meters, and developed a deep respect for composers such as Alban Berg, Gabrielle Faure and John Cage. But it would be her irrepressible individuality that threatened her academic performance when she failed 20th Century Composition for writing something so unique and unexpected, that her teacher remarked, "This isn't even music"!
As it turns out, it's more than music. After moving to San Francisco in 1998 and studying and performing for about a year, Reba made an abrupt break from the classical scene: "I had had enough of singing other people's music. I couldn't stand the fact that so many women's roles in opera were written by men. I finally turned in my scores and rented a piano. I had a voice of my own, and I wanted to use it."
She achieved that goal with her first release, "Live at Studio 43," the charmed union of a crystalline vocal power and masterful piano work. Rich, confident instrumental stylings that counter her luminous poetry with daring, organic chords that never threaten to obscure the siren at the center of the song.
The result is achingly confidential and charged with an otherworldly beauty and depth. So maybe that teacher was right, after all. Maybe this isn't music. Perhaps it requires a new category, some place where rules are broken, revelations are made, and the thing we once called music takes form in the air before us with a grace and dimension we can almost touch.
Currently, Reba is writing, recording and performing in Berlin, Germany. While compiling poetry and field recordings, she began touring her performance project "Electropera" in May 2004.
Her second release, 'Seeds From the Twisted Pear' is due for release in 2006. Stay tuned...

author: KarenGI know lots of people who would NOT like this. I also know many who would. Her voice is lovely but like Joni Mitchell's if you're a stickler for consistent pitch it can be grating. Her mastery of her instruments (both piano and voice) is obvious. I'd love to see her live, but as she's leaving soon for Europe I guess I won't get that chance. This cd is sparse, I'd be interested to see what she might do if given free reign in a studio with other musicians and toys.

Originally from the heart
author: Bob SchottRefreshing to hear someone play from their 'Heart' instead of their 'Computer', without all of the 'worn out' overdubbing that all of the so-called pop stars, 'Spears'and the rest of the Record label 'clones' have to do because they lack quality and power. Reminisent of 'Torri Amos'. Great Piano work here and good vocal quality as well. A little reminisent of the Carol King era 'Woodstock' solo/accoutics', etc. ...'And'... she doesn't have to wear skimpy clothes and write sleasy to get and keep your attention. Way to go 'Reba'..good work.
