notes

On Point and Red is the second full-length from Vancouver's Readymade. Atmospheric, melodic and delay-laden, layers of guitars and synths propel the album through 10 tracks of urban soundscape, where seemingly slack and militant attitudes play-off but don't play-out.

The album sees original members Arch (guitar, vocals), Kevin Hilts (keyboards) and Throwen Daggers (bass) return after over a year of inactivity to once again fill the lanes on the break, this time joined by d.t. (mixboard) and Dr. Roberts (drum kit) of the sublime Pipedream. The band transcends their early mastery of old-school shoegaze to create a recording of suble dynamics, mellow catchiness, arcing melodies and propulsive rhythms.

Like walking slow motion into a wave, breathing under water, freefalling through mountains of clouds, Readymade attaches a cord to your gut and leads you through landscapes of dreamy emo pop, making for a journey no less than extraordinary, especially for the Shoegazer, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and Mogwai fan. Equally misty, smoky, rough and rugged as well as rich, reverberating and sonic, "On Point and Red" seems to give voice to the smallest, most hidden parts of us.

  • Sharpened Hooks and Well-Crafted Pop Songs
    author: Bruce Lomet (CHINASKI)

Readymade gleans the textures of the drone/space scene and apply it to their sharpened hooks and well-crafted pop songs. "On Point and Red" touches on most of the spectrum between Eno's ambient series and My Bloody Valentine's signature wall of sound. The centerpiece for the album is "Terminal Sounds at Night" which captures the feel of an airport slowed down to a crawl at 4:00 am. The open, empty structuring and hazy feel recalling Bark Psychosis. Pick this album up - you will be duly rewarded.
