notes

If Jimmy Buffet grew up in Detroit, it would sound like this. Rays new album “I’M FREE” equals and surpasses his earlier hits. Produced, composed, arranged and sung by Parker, “I’M FREE” showcases a new found beginning for this exceptional artist and embraces a variety of musical styles including Urban, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Blues, and Reggae. “This album represents a lot more than just a song or a project,” says Ray. For the first time in many years I feel free to express myself the way I used to when I first started!”

Utilizing the cream of L.A.’s studio A team along with Ray himself on both acoustic and electric guitar, “I’M FREE” exhibits a new maturity for the man who first gained fame writing and recording youth based love songs, both with his band RAYDIO (“You Can’T Change That”) and later as a solo artist (“Ghostbusters”). With more adult themes to sing about, Ray wrote every song on the album with the exception of the David Gates/Bread hit “Guitar Man.” From the beautiful acoustic guitar opening on “Mexico” to the closing instrumental “Gibson’s Theme,” Parker takes the listener on a heartfelt journey that is both musically stunning and lyrically moving. You definately have to buy this one!

  • Welcome Back Ray!!!
    author: Roosevelt

Ray Parker Jr truly is free on his latest release. Free to cross musical boundaries and talk about subjects in a very direct way. It has the smooth jazz feel represented in Mismaloya Beach & Gibson's Theme (which I would personally like to hear more of). 70's rock on The Book, MOR on Glass of Wine & Mexico and others. Parker has toung firmly in cheek on many selection which bring a smile even though they talk about difficult subjects. All in all is is a welcome return and did I mention that a full smooth jazz album would be great???

HE’S BACK!!!!…. RAY PARKER JR IS BACK WITH A BRILLIANT BODY OF WORK… Time waits for no one EXCEPT Ray Parker Jr! After a long hiatus…well deserved I am sure, Ray has created a brilliant eclectic body of work worthy of the wait. Something for everyone! Classic Rock…Confessional Blues…Catchy Pop…Smooth Jazz and a moving finale entitled Gibson's Theme, a tribute to his son Gibson. Being a brilliant guitarist known all over the world for his incredible rhythmic precision, tasty licks and catchy hooks it is good to see and hear what’s cookin’ in the mind and heart of Ray Parker Jr. Having grown up with him in Detroit and having him as a musical mentor (He introduced me to the music business), my heart smiles at seeing him so empowered! He's back and DOING HIS THING AS ONLY HE CAN… This CD, I repeat is really worthy of the wait it is full of great songs!!!

This is definately the cd us Ray Parker Jr. fans have been waiting for. This cd is awesome and Ray Parker shows us just how versatile and talented he is on here. He branches way out into smooth jazz, rock, and a number of other genres on this cd and does a terrific job on every song. I don't want to call this a comeback cd because in my cd player Ray's music has never left even before I got my hands on this new awesome gem. This cd proves to me as with many other fan's that Ray is like the energizer bunny he keeps going and going and getting better and better with time. Thanks alot Cd baby once again you help me get my hands on the hottest music out there!

This CD is a must have!! Just AWESOME!!!!!

  • A great record from a great man
    author: FredW

Choosing to sell a record here (where the artists are equitably rewarded) after 15 years of silence (without one fashionable title) from a guitarist of such class is simply smart. Choosing to play what you want and being yourself with your own stories (except guitar man), your smile, your guitar and your voice is brillant: A great record from a great man. Because they look alike [I just shook hands once with him after a concert in Paris to dedicate this CD so I aint no member of his entourage ;-)]

Being a longtime fan and promoter of Ray Parker Jr., I have to say that this is amongst the best releases so far this year and just might be Ray's best effort yet. Having to wait 15 years between recordings is a long time, but the result was well worth it. Every track is outstanding and could easily be a single for AC or Urban AC radio formats as well as AAA & Smooth Jazz. Also being a loyal David Gates follower, Ray's version of "The Guitar man" stays true to he original version while adding just enough of Ray's influence to make it one of his songs. He has certainly come a long way from "Ghostbusters", an 80's staple.

  • Ray Gets the Call with New CD “I’m Free”
    author: Tim Glover

Ray Parker Jr. returns after a lengthy hiatus (last release was 1991’s “I Love You Like You Are”) of 15 years. The CD opens with a song titled “Mexico” that is highlighted by a beautiful rhythm arrangement accented by mariachi horns and an intoxicating tale of reconnecting with a lover down south of the boarder. “Middle Age Crisis” takes on the May/December relationship of an older man and a younger woman with a child. The rhythm track sets an interesting back drop with Parker adding tasty electric and acoustic fills that bring dramatic tension to the song. “Mismaloya Beach” takes its name from an exquisite beach located just outside of Puerto Vallarta. On “Mismaloya Beach” Parker is perhaps at his most assured in an instrumental setting as he floats along delivering an irresistible lead melody that showcases his considerable skill on guitar. The CD closes with “Gibson’s Theme” (the third instrumental) a song that is named after Parker’s youngest son. Parker was inspired to write the song while watching Gibson perform in a gymnastics class. “Gibson’s Theme” has a cinematic scope to it with an arrangement that recalls the “Chariots of Fire” soundtrack. The track moves along in a majestic way with all the hope and wonder that is inspired by youth. On “I’m Free” Parker is decidedly more mature and essential with an expression that celebrates experience and life.

  • Ray's Back!! This CD is Simply Outstanding!!!
    author: J.R. Fenwick

Nobody does it better than Ray when it comes to telling a story through music. This album does it all from jazz, little rock feel on "I'm FREE", reggae to ballads. If you are a music lover, this is a must have!
