notes
Take an exotic musical journey around the world with Kimo & Jody Huybrechts of the world fusion group Ranga Pae: be refreshed by the Japanese koto with its reminiscent sound of waterfalls or the exotic flavor of Indian music on the sitar, experience the heartbeat of Bali through the bamboo tingklik, hear the haunting melodies of bamboo flutes from Hawaii and Indonesia blended with Latin rhythms, jazz harmonies, new age nuances, and other western forms of music.
Like Rain features Jody Huybrechts on koto, tingklik, angklung, guitar, bass, and flute with Kimo Huybrechts on guitar, sitar, Hawaiian nose flute, suling, Indonesian lute, Thai mouth organ, ka’eke’eke, ‘ukeke, and percussion. Guest musicians include Matt Tobias (drums), Andi Fitts (guitar), and Michael Kitchen & Don Stephens (keyboards).
Compositions range from Uhane Nui (probably the first recording to feature a Hawaiian nose flute accompanied by a full band); Awakenings (a soaring composition that begins with the koto and an Indonesian bird whistle and builds in intensity with the addition of strings and electric guitar, ending with the sound of taiko and drums); Gravity (featuring Balinese tingklik with a jazzy, Latin groove described as “Santana goes to Bali”); and an unusual version of Amazing Grace done Indian-style on sitar and tabla in an improvisational format.
Ranga Pae (which means "encircling the earth" in Maori) was formed on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1995 by the husband and wife team of Kimo and Jody Huybrechts. Residing on the island of Maui, Kimo & Jody perform regularly at some of Maui's finest venues and can be heard regularly at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
JODY HUYBRECHTS was born in Massachusetts and raised in Los Angeles. She began studying guitar at the age of nine, and flute when she was eleven years old. She fell in love with the koto after seeing the Japanese-American jazz band Hiroshima in concert as a college student. After graduating from UCLA, she taught English in Miyazaki, Japan where she studied koto with grand master Mutsuko Miyata, and later with Dr. Bernice Hirai in Honolulu.
KIMO HUYBRECHTS was born at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas and raised in California, Singapore and the Big Island of Hawaii. Of Dutch, Indonesian, French, Chinese, and Hawaiian ancestry, Kimo was exposed to ethnic music at a young age. Kimo's musical studies began with guitar, then he became interested in bamboo flutes while traveling through Indonesia. After graduating from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA, he moved to his parents' farm on the Big Island where he learned the art of building and playing Hawaiian nose flutes and other native Hawaiian instruments from Kumu Hula Lanakila Brandt.
In addition to being accomplished musicians trained in western and eastern music, Kimo and Jody both hold university degrees in cultural anthropology with an emphasis in ethnic music. They lecture on ethnomusicology and do workshops with their indigenous instruments. Their desire is to promote appreciation of cultural music and instruments through performing, teaching, composing, and recording projects.
Like Rain is the first album by world fusion artist Ranga Pae. Their second album, Full Circle, was released in 2004 and is also available through CD Baby.
